Obituary

ZAPUCHLAK: The death of William "Bill" Zapuchlak, beloved husband of Rose, occurred at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Thursday, August 31, 2006. Bill was born March 2, 1917 in Rossburn, Manitoba. He grew up on the family farm in Menzies. He later moved to Beulah and farmed with his brother Tom until 1949, when he married Rose Pohanayko and they started farming on their own. In 1957, he moved to Brandon to start at Shilo Base as a groundskeeper. Uncle Bill built the back nine holes of the Shilo golf course. In the winter he worked as an icemaker at the Shilo Curling Club. Bill retired from Shilo in 1982, at the age of 65. Bill was predeceased by his father Tymko Zapuchlak in 1958; his mother Nastie Zapuchlak in 1964; brother and sister Harry and Teenie in infancy; sisters Mary, Annie, Alice, Kay and Leona; and brother Tom. Bill is survived by his loving wife Rose of Brandon; sisters Marie Jaros of Ottawa, Ontario, who is 101 years old, Nellie Stusick of Fort Francis; sisters-in-law Gladys Zapuchlak of Edmonton, Alberta, Anne Melnyk of Brandon; brother-in-law Mike Pohanayko (Lorraine) of Prince George, British Columbia, and many nieces and nephews. Prayers were held at Memories Chapel, on Tuesday, September 5, 2006. Divine Liturgy was celebrated at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church on Wednesday, September 6, 2006. Celebrant was Rev. Fr. Michael Tkachuk. Mr. Tony Yuriy was cantor. Cross bearer was David Hyde. Urn bearer was Joyce Jaros. Interment followed in the Brandon Cemetery. Donations in memory of Bill may be made to Canadian Cancer Society-Manitoba Division, 415 1st Street, Brandon, Manitoba R7A 2W8. Expressions of sympathy may be made at www.memorieschapel.com. Arrangements were with Memories Chapel & Pre-Planning Centre, 727-0330.
