RADFORD, William "Bruce" Radford of Brandon: It is with deep sadness that the family announce his passing on Wednesday, March 29, 2006 after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer Disease. Bruce was born on June 10, 1917 in Neepawa, the son of Viola and Robert Radford. He was from a large and loving family of ten siblings that were born over 26 year span. Bruce was the third child born and was always very conscious of his responsibilities to both his parents and siblings, doing whatever he could to make life easier for them. His early years were spent in the Glendale, Pine Creek and Livingstone Districts, which are all in the Neepawa/Gladstone area before the family settled on a farm close to Keyes. He left school at the end of grade 10 in order to help out his family by going to work instead of continuing with his education. Jobs and money were both scarce at the time so Bruce started his early working years farming with his parents and was then hired on to manage a farm owned by Mr. William Morton, the local MLA for that area of the province. When war was declared in 1939, Bruce joined the Canadian. Forces with the Princess Patricia Canadian Light Infantry & later transferred to the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders. In December of that year, he was on the first troop train from Winnipeg to Halifax, shipping out on the Oramo Barrow. He trained in England and Scotland. It was here in 1941, that he met Betty Ross at the Palais Royale dance hall in Edinburgh. This hall and many like it, were where many of the Canadian soldiers met their " War Brides". They were married January 24, 1942, in Edinburgh, prior to Bruce being shipped out for combat. His sniper division was eventually sent to France and in August of 1944, Bruce was severely wounded. In May of 1945, after extensive hospital stays in France and England, he finally arrived back home to Keyes. Oldest daughter, Gail was born in Edinburgh in 1943 and stayed with the Ross family until the re-united family returned to Canada. On their arrival home, they returned to the Radford's small farm in the Keyes District, not far from Grandma & Grandpa Radford. Eric, their only son, was born later that year, followed by the birth of their 2nd daughter, Norma in, 1947. They were happy years, but very difficult for Bruce due to his war injuries and in 1953, he pursued a new career with the Manitoba Good Roads. The job started as a part time position and in the off season, he worked in the mines in Atikokan, Ontario. The family went where the new roads were being built, including stops in Kelwood, Onanole, Neepawa, Brandon and finally Minnedosa, where Bruce retired after 25 years of service with the Highways Department. Dad was Past President and a life member of the Royal Canadian Legion in Minnedosa and enjoyed the camaraderie of fellow veterans and friends at branches also in Gladstone, Kelwood, Erickson, Neepawa and Brandon. He thoroughly enjoyed music, dancing, cribbage, poker with" the boys" and living life to the fullest. He loved to tease and had a twinkle in his eye that told all he could get into mischief at any given moment. Many happy years were spent at Minnedosa, residing both in town as well as at their home at Brandosa Beach. Entertaining friends and spending time with his family were the most important things in his life. Bruce and Betty enjoyed several trips over the years to Scotland, New Zealand, Hawaii, Mexico, Spain, the southern United States and much of Canada. The last move that Dad was to make was back to Brandon to reside in Fairview Personal Care Home, for the last 2 and a half years of his life .The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to his many "Angels" there, who allowed him to keep his dignity & treated him with such special care. He was able to continue a special relationship with his family, in spite of the advances of his illness, because of the TLC given. Dad made many great friends from all the communities that he worked in and even in Fairview, he was appreciated by staff for his kind & gentle nature. Bruce will be lovingly remembered by his wife of 64 years, Betty; children; Gail (Ross) Radford of Calgary; Eric of Winnipeg; Norma ( Bill) Edwards of Brandon; daughter-in-law, Doreen Radford of Winnipeg. A very special grandpa and great-grandpa will be greatly missed by: Cathy (Bill) Tremain and children Rhiannon, Eryn & Mikhail; Lisa Tremain and daughter Lacey; Cindy Radford and daughter Kasmir; Sherri (Jeff) West and Liam; Jennifer (Slav) Serek and twins Gabrielle & Kyra; Kristal (Daryn) Laminman and children Brittany & Brendan and his only grandson, Todd (Brenda) Edwards and their family Dylan & Halle. He also leaves his sister, Sheila (Bill) Norris of Red Deer, AB; and brothers, Ron (Maxine) of Rivers, Keith, Barrie (Norma) of Gladstone; and sisters in law, Margaret and Eleanor of Neepawa. There are numerous in laws from Betty's family in the U.K. that knew Dad well and will miss his wonderful personality. Numerous nieces, nephews, other family members and friends will also remember him with fondness and he will be sorely missed. He was pre-deceased by his parents; brothers, Bob, Ken and Lawrence;as well as sisters and brothers-in-law, Muriel and Jack McKenzie and Iris and Jack Henley. He will be missed deeply by his family and friends, but leaves a wonderful legacy for all. The Ceremony to Celebrate Bruce's Life will be held at Memories Chapel, 330-18th Street North, on Saturday, April 1, 2006 at 1:00 pm. Rev. Harvey Hurren of Knox United Church will officiate. Urn Bearer will be his grandson, Todd and a Legion Honour Guard will be present. Interment will follow in the Veterans' Section of the Minnedosa Cemetery at 4:15 pm. Flowers are gratefully declined.
