Obituary

PREVADA, William Victor: It is with great sadness we announce the passing of William on March 12, 2006. William passed away peacefully after a lengthy illness at the Assiniboine Centre and now joins his wife, Kathleen in heaven. William was born in Brandon on October 20, 1927, the youngest child of the late Alexander and Sophie Prevada. William received his education in Brandon at Earl Oxford and David Livingston Schools. After Grade 10, William entered the work force, and did various jobs from shoveling coal to being a bellhop at the old Prince Edward Hotel. But in the 1950's he found his niche with the Canadian Pacific Railway and it became his life career, spending over 30 years as a Car-Man. In 1963, William was transferred to Winnipeg to the Weston Shops and spent 10 years commuting, before returning to Brandon to retire in 1986. William made many special friendships throughout his C.P.R. days and continued to maintain them well into his retirement years. He was an avid gardener and could hardly wait for planting season and watching his vegetables sprout out of the ground after much hard work. Tinkling with older cars with his brother-in-law, Andy Kowal, was also a favorite hobby of his. Many endless hours were spent working on Nova's, Duster's and giving them another chance at life even if they didn't look like they had a chance to make it. As our dad, he taught us that if you work hard and live a good clean life, you will certainly reap the benefits of it. He also was a great cat lover and leaves behind a beautiful calico cat, Toonie, who was his constant companion during his final years of life. William married Kathleen Kowal on November 1, 1952 and they spent 49 happy years together. William was predeceased by his beloved wife, Kathleen in 2002; two sisters; one brother, and his parents. He will be dearly missed by his daughters, Diane Lomas and Deborah Prevada; grandchildren, Karen Shewfelt of Montreal and Michael Lomas of Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan; sisters Marie Knight, and Jessie (Don) Cox; one brother Peter Prevada. Also he leaves two special sister-in-laws, Victoria Kowal and Rose Phillips; numerous nieces and nephews, and special friend Pete Lysak. Our dad had a lengthy illness of kidney disease, but he put up a brave battle right to the end. The Funeral Ceremony was held at Memories Chapel on Thursday, March 16, 2006. Interment followed in the Brandon Cemetery. Expressions of sympathy may be made at www.memorieschapel.com Arrangements were with Memories Chapel & Pre-Planning Centre, 727-0330.
