Our dear father and grandfather passed away early Monday, April 26, 2004 in Brandon, Manitoba, with his children at his side. William, better known as Bill, was born March 23, 1919 in Shawinigan, PQ, then known as Shawinigan Falls. He was educated at McGill and Queen's Universities, graduating in Medicine from Queen's in 1946. During the Second World War, he was enlisted in the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps. He joined the Dept. of Physiology and Medical Research, the
University of Manitoba in 1947, and was assistant and associate Professor from 1947-1962. In 1953, he spent a post-graduate year at Cambridge University, England. He became Professor of Biochemistry from 1962 to 1974, and was Director of Clinical Chemistry at Winnipeg General Hospital, later Health Sciences Centre, from 1962-1974. His field of research and publication were thyroid disease, endocrine physiology and fat metabolism. In 1974, he became Associate Director of
the Westman Regional Laboratory, Brandon, to later become Clinical Director. He retired in 1987. At home, he loved his golf, his gardening, duck hunting, reading, and had an active interest in ideas and current affairs to the end. William served as a member of Seniors for Seniors, on the board of Hobbs Manor, where he came to live. He served on the Vestry of St. Matthew's Cathedral, and was a member of the Westman Association for Terminal Care in Hospices and the Assiniboine
Historical Society. William was predeceased by his wife, Madeline in 1989, and is survived by sons; Mark and Clive (Yvette) and grandchildren Rhys, Adrienne and Lauren. The family thanks our dad's kind friends who helped him in recent days, the concerned neighbours at Hobbs Manor, as well as the medical and nursing staff at Brandon Regional Health Centre and We Care staff for their
kindness and sensitivity. A graveside ceremony will be held at the Brandon cemetery on Friday, April 30, 2004 at 1:30 pm. The Rev. Paul Curtis will officiate. Flowers are gratefully declined.
