Obituary

It is with great sadness the family announces the passing of William Frederick "Bill", formerly of Brandon, recently of Onanole, Manitoba, on Tuesday, March 13, 2001 at the Erickson District Health Centre, after a courageous battle with cancer. Bill will be lovingly remembered and sadly missed by his wife, Verna of 47 years, and daughter, Shelley (Stephen) Reid of Winnipeg, and son, Brent (Nancy) Payne of Brandon, and grandsons, Michael Reid and Brock Payne. Also surviving are his brother, Harvey (Florence) of Brandon; sister, Marjorie (John) Nicholson of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia; brother-in-law, Les (Carol) McCune of Sinclair; and sister-in-law, Helen (Don) Westbrook of Carberry, many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Bill was predeceased by his parents, Frederick John Payne and Florence Violet Duncan. Bill was born at his grandparent's farmhouse at Ewart, Manitoba on May 21, 1932. He attended school in Ewart and Reston, Manitoba. During his lifetime Bill worked in his fathers store at Sinclair. Bill and Verna were married in Sinclair on October 17, 1953 and later moved to Brandon where he worked for the Scott Fruit Co. They moved to Saskatchewan in 1956 where Bill was employed for ten years with the Regent Drilling Co. throughout Saskatchewan. They made many good friends there. In 1968 Bill changed career paths. They moved back to Brandon where he achieved his certificate in plumbing. He was employed by Barr Repka, and Cornell Bros. as a plumber, and later worked for 21 years as a plumber in Shilo. Bill's greatest interests in life were his family. He spent many hours with his two grandsons, Michael and Brock, fishing, boating and doing wood working. Bill really enjoyed his home at Clear Lake and loved walking and going on hikes. Bill and Verna loved to travel, and had some wonderful trips to Florida, Arizona, Texas, Mexico, Nova Scotia and British Columbia. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to family and friends. The Ceremony to Celebrate Bill's Life was held at Memories Chapel, 330 - 18th Street North, on Saturday, March 17, 2001 at 11:00 a.m. The Pallbearers were Ian Cupples, Scott Westbrook, Danny Baker, Doug Gies, Doug Walker and Tom Gray. Honorary Pallbearers were all in attendance. Reflections were given by Stephen Reid, and a lovely duet, Amazing Grace, was sung by Anna and Jared Weir. The Interment followed at the Brandon Cemetery. Flowers are gratefully declined.
