MAIR: William John (Jack) Mair, beloved brother and uncle, passed away on March 26, 2008 at the Assiniboine Centre, Brandon. Jack was born on September 3, 1924 in the Municipality of Whitewater, Manitoba. He was the youngest son of William and Ottie Mair. Jack married Gladys Dunbar on December 11, 1956. He was predeceased by: his parents; his wife, Gladys; his brother, Gordon; his sister-in-law, Emily Hanson and his brothers-in-law, Charles Cowieson, Millen Dunbar and Herman Hanson. Jack received his education at Elgin Consolidated School and farmed until 1975 in the Elgin area, on Crofthead Farm. He subsequently worked for eleven years at Diehl's Furniture and Funeral Home in Souris; then, for four more years at Brockie Donovan Funeral Home in Brandon. Jack and Gladys moved from the farm to Brandon in 1990 and became residents of Lion's Manor (Phase 2) in 1999. Jack was Past Master of Elgin and Glenwood Masonic Lodges; Past District Deputy of Sixth Masonic District; Past First Principal of Royal Arch Chapter of Hartney; and Past District Superintendent of Royal Arch, District # 6. He also served as Past Preceptor of Brandon Preceptory and was a member of the Brandon District Shrine Club and Khartum Temple, Winnipeg. Jack was a former member of Club 293 Toastmasters, Brandon, and a member of Central United Church of Brandon. Jack and Gladys were active in square dancing for many years, enjoyed golf and found time for numerous pleasant weekend and holiday trips in their travel trailer. Jack is survived by his sister, Doreen Cowieson; sister-in-law, May Dunbar; nieces Judy (Rod) Johnson (children Scott and Alison) and Lisa (Curtis) Murray (children Tyler and MacKenzie); nephews Cameron (Candace) Cowieson (children James and Amber), and Brian (Dawn) Hanson (children Kristin and Evan). A private graveside service will be held at Souris and Glenwood Cemetery, Saturday, March 29, 2008. Rev. Shannon McCarthy of Central United Church will officiate.
