FARMER: W.J. "Bill" Farmer passed away peacefully with his family at his side on Monday, September 8, 2003 at the Brandon Regional Health Centre. He was born on April 13, 1922 in Lauder, Manitoba, son of William and Ada Farmer. Dad grew up on the farm and attended Tremblay School. He joined the R.C.A.F. in 1941 and after training in Canada, he served overseas in England, France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. He returned to Canada in October 1945. After his return from overseas, Dad and Mom were married, exchanging vows on July 2, 1946. Dad then began looking for a grain company to work for. His career as an elevator agent lasted 38 years with three grain companies: Scottish Co-op Wholesale, McCabe Grain Co. and United Grain Growers. Dad retired in 1984 to Boissevain, Manitoba where he and Mom continued to live until moving to Brandon in 1994 and resided until his passing. Left to mourn and cherish many fond memories are his loving wife of 57 years, Frances; three daughters Sylvia (Larry) Mills, Janie Farmer, and Lori (Willie) Voth; and three grandchildren Erin Mills, Danny and Carlea Voth. He is also survived by his two sisters Kit MacLaren and Rosa Yeomans; one brother George (Margaret) Farmer; in-laws Thelma and Orland Potter, Sylvia and Jack Hamilton, Ed and Helen Chandler; and many nieces and nephews. He was a lifetime member of the Royal Canadian Legion and devoted many hours at all levels of Branch and Provincial Command. Dad was well known as an avid curler, golfer and ball player participating in all sports until poor health no longer permitted. He had a knack for cooking; his culinary skills were remarkable and enjoyed by all. Dad spent many hours at the coffee shop swapping stories with his buddies. He always enjoyed a good joke and usually had one or two of his own to share on most occasions. He had a pleasing personality and a wonderful sense of humour and was well liked by all who knew him. Bill Farmer was a most exceptional husband, loving father and grandfather. He will be sadly missed by all his family and friends. Funeral Service was held at Memories Chapel on Thursday, September 11, 2003. Legion Padre Harvey Hurren officiated. Honorary Pallbearers were members of the Royal Canadian Legion. Interment followed in the Brandon Cemetery. Flowers are gratefully declined. Friends who wish may make a donation in memory of Bill to the Kidney Foundation of Canada, Manitoba Branch, 42 McTavish Avenue East, Brandon, MB R7A 2B2. The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to Dr. Riche, staff and all the nurses on the 2nd floor of the Assiniboine Centre and 4th floor of the Brandon Regional Health Centre. Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to memorieschapel@mts.net. Arrangements were with Memories Chapel & Pre-Planning Centre, 727-0330.
