William James Dakers, known lovingly to many as Jim or Jimmy, passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 9, 2025, at the Brandon Regional Health Centre.
Jim was born on February 3, 1959, in Ottawa, Ontario to David and Elizabeth Dakers. He lived a life filled with love, compassion and an unwavering devotion to his family. We ask that you remember him not for the way his life ended, but for the way it was lived, and for the profound impact it had on the lives of those who had the pleasure of knowing him.
After growing up in Ottawa, Jim embarked on a life-changing adventure at age 21, following his instincts to Thompson, Manitoba where he joined INCO/VALE. What started as a 6-month position blossomed into an extraordinary 37.5-year career in mining, where his strong work ethic and genuine care for his fellow miners earned him deep respect throughout the company. Even as he advanced in his career, Jim never lost his down-to-earth nature and ability to connect with everyone he met. His retirement in 2017 marked the end of a remarkable journey that began with a young man's leap of faith.
In 1986, Jim's life was forever enriched when he met his beloved wife Sharon through what the family fondly remembers as a 'setup'. That fortunate introduction blossomed into a profound partnership spanning 39 years, during which they created not just a home, but a cherished family legacy that continues to flourish today.
Jim lived life with enthusiasm and open arms, finding joy in both active pursuits and quiet pleasures. An avid sportsman, he loved hockey, bowling, hunting and fishing. His Sunday routine was sacred – settling in to watch wrestling and NASCAR racing, often surrounded by family and friends. A natural connector of people, Jim's daily coffee visits and weekly walks to buy lottery tickets at the local store were about far more than errands – they were opportunities to forge friendships. His remarkable ability to connect with anyone he met led to countless meaningful relationships that enriched both his life and others.
Jim is survived by his loving wife, Sharon; sons William (Jennifer), Jordon; daughter Elizabeth (Kevin); 6 grandchildren; Delia, Carlin, Kenny, Makinna, Genevieve, Isabella, brother Barry (Lori) and sister Dianne. And beloved uncle to many nieces and nephews, along with so many friends.
Jim was predeceased by his father David, mother Elizabeth and brother David.
A Celebration of Life will take place at Memories Chapel, 330 18th Street North, Brandon, MB on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, at 2:00 pm.
Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations in memory of Jim may be made to Cancer Care Manitoba, Room 1160 - 675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg MB R3E 0V9.
