Obituary

BUGA: The death of William Benedict "Bill" Buga, beloved husband of Jean occurred on June 13, 1999 at the Brandon Regional Health Centre. Bill was born in the Western Ukraine on August 20, 1920. He came to Canada at a very young age to Czar, Alberta and later moved to Leipzig, Saskatchewan. He received his education in a number of Saskatchewan communities and at St. Paul's College in Winnipeg. Bill started his career as a trainman for CP Rail in 1944. He worked first in Sutherland, Saskatchewan and then came to Brandon in 1945. Bill retired as a conductor in 1980 after 36 years of service. As a hobby, he enjoyed woodworking. He loved to work with his hands and was happy to be tinkering and fixing things. Bill enjoyed gardening and loved his flowers. In the spring, he would spend many hours in his greenhouse tending to the small plants. Bill found pleasure in golfing and square dancing. He was quietly community minded and was active in the building committee of the Ukrainian National Home which was a centennial project in 1967. His church was very important to him and he sang in the choir for many years. He maintained his involvement until 1996, when his illness prevented his continuation. A memorable event in Bill's life occurred in 1989 when he was able to visit his birthplace in the Ukraine. His home and his family were his greatest joy and his two grandchildren were a blessing in his life. Bill is survived by his wife, Jean (Mazier) of almost 50 years - August 6, 1949; son, Jim (Jackie), granddaughter Karla-Rae, grandson Jonathan; brother James of Thunder Bay; sisters-in-law, Bernice (Andy) Twa of Toronto, Josephine (James) Clark of Burlington and his nephew and nieces. Bill was predeceased by his father, John in 1969 and his mother, Melanie in 1977. Prayers will be served on Thursday, June 17, 1999 at 8:00 p.m. at Memories Chapel, 330 - 18th Street North, Brandon. Rite of the Funeral will be held on Friday, June 18, 1999 at 10:30 a.m. at the Holy Ghost Ukrainian Orthodox Church. Rev. Miron Pozniak will officiate. Interment will follow at the Brandon Cemetery. Flowers are graciously declined. Donations in memory of Bill may be made to the Heart & Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 203 - 42 McTavish Ave. E., Brandon, MB, R7A 2B2 or to a church of your choice. Arrangements are with Memories Chapel & Pre-Planning Centre, 727-0330.
