Vivian was born on March 14, 1918 in Portage La Prairie, Manitoba, the youngest of six children. She was raised and educated in Archibald and Lonsboro School Districts. In her late teens, Vivian's family moved to Kingsley where she met her husband, Stanley Shewfelt. They were married on November 20, 1939. They continued to live in Kingsley where they raised three children and farmed until 1977. From 1968 to 1977, Stan and Vivian spent the winters in Winnipeg, where they worked in the mail order of the T. Eaton Co and retired there following the sale of their farm. In 1990, to avoid the Manitoba winters, Stan and Vivian moved to Surrey, BC. During her years in the Kingsley Community, Vivian was a longtime member of the UCW and served as leader of the Somerset 4-H Sewing Club. Throughout her life she was an avid gardener, and enjoyed knitting, sewing and cooking. In her later years Vivian enjoyed watching curling and baseball, especially the Blue Jays, and took a keen interest in North American politics. She was an enthusiastic supporter of the educational, musical and athletic pursuits of her children and grandchildren. In 2004 Vivian returned to Manitoba where she resided at the Lion's Manor in Brandon until the time of her passing. She was predeceased by her husband, Stanley in 1997; sisters, Helen (Jimmie) Wilson, Theo (Jack) Ray, Bernice, Vera (Royden) Manning; brother, Leo; sister-in-law, Maude (Clarence) Sisson; and brothers-in-law, Lorne and David Shewfelt. She is also survived by her sisters-in-law, Dorothy and Doris Shewfelt as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Cremation has taken place, and at Vivian's request, a graveside service will be held at Kingsley Cemetery, near Somerset, at a later date. Flowers are gratefully declined.
