COCHRANE: VIVIAN ETHEL COCHRANE (nee Barber), formerly of Lion's Manor, passed away on Friday, December 2, 2005 at the Brandon Regional Health Center with her family at her side. Vivian was born on October 22, 1919 at Underhill, MB, the only child of Rupert and Ethel Barber. She attended grade 1-8 at Underhill School, Underhill, MB and completed Grade 9 and 10 by correspondence. Her best-liked means of transportation to school was in a cart pulled by her Shetland Pony. She showed this Shetland Pony at the Elgin Fair and was successful in winning many red ribbons. Vivian met Lloyd at a dance at Underhill School. They had many common interests dancing being a favorite pastime, they never missed a barn dance in the area. Vivian married Lloyd Cochrane on September 21, 1940 at St. Mary's Anglican Church, on 1st Street, in Brandon. They lived and farmed with Vivian's parents after they were married. In 1943, they moved to the Ballantyne farm at Fairfax, where they raised three daughters and one son. Vivian loved the outdoors and could be found driving the tractor, combine, baler, or any other piece of equipment on the farm. They retired to Brandon in 1970. After retirement, Vivian enjoyed the 23 winters she spent with Lloyd in Texas. Vivian was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star in Minto and Hartney. She was a very caring person, always putting her family's needs ahead of her own. The many family times enjoyed were very special to everyone. Even though Vivian endured many health challenges her sense of humor was always with her. She never complained but just carried on the best way she could. In addition to her love for her family, Vivian enjoyed flowers and dancing. While still living at Fairfax, Vivian and Lloyd attended dances in the area. Vivian and her partner Lloyd, square danced together for 37 years, beginning in Elgin and ending in Texas in 1992. She cherished the memories of dancing with people from one coast to the other, throughout the United States, England, Scotland and Wales. This past summer was highlighted by a visit from Jerry Rash, a square dance caller from Harlingen, Texas and his wife, Phyllis. Jerry's nickname for Vivian was "Tiger". It fit her perfectly. She will be lovingly remembered by: her husband of 65 years, Lloyd, three daughters Fairlie "Faye" (Keith) Parker, Darlene (Glen) Rose, Delma (Richard) Schraeder, and one son Jack (Sharyl).
