WHYTE: The death of Violet Jean Whyte of Brandon, formerly of Douglas, occurred at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Monday, April 25, 2005. Violet was born in the Derry district of North Cypress Municipality on February 25, 1905, the daughter of John and Hannah Blair. She attended Derry School and completed her grade 9, writing her exam in Brandon. Violet worked on the family farm and later did domestic and housekeeping work in Derry and in Brandon. She married George Whyte and they lived on a farm north of Douglas, where they also raised their two daughters, Elizabeth and Sheila. Violet was a member of the Douglas United Church, the Women's Institute, Women's Association and Women's Missionary Society. Upon her husband's death in 1959, Violet moved with her daughters to Douglas. In 1962, she moved to Brandon, where she spent the remainder of her life. Violet lived a quiet life. Her family and friends were most important to her and always welcome in her home. Violet enjoyed gardening, especially growing flowers and loved to bake, sharing the results with visitors over a cup of tea. Every year Violet looked forward to attending the Thresherman's Reunion in Austin. She watched the parade, which evoked many happy memories, and visited with family. Violet loved going downtown and having lunch or tea at Paul's Restaurant. In later years, she worked on crossword and jigsaw puzzles, which she claimed kept her mind sharp. Violet also enjoyed helping to care for her faithful companion, Toby, the family dog. On February 26, 2005, the celebration of her 100th birthday, with family and friends brought her great happiness.
