SMITH: Verna Marguerite (nee McDonald) Smith born February 18, 1906 near Reston, Manitoba, died at Central Park Lodge, Brandon on September 4, 1999. She received her schooling at Tilston and took her nurses training at the Winnipeg General Hospital, graduating in 1929. She nursed in Winnipeg, Portage la Prairie and Brandon, retiring from the Assiniboine Hospital in 1973. Verna married Everett Smith in June 1930 and they moved to Brandon in 1938. She was very active in the Royal Purple Lodge where she made many good friends and was Past Honored Royal Lady. She always made herself available when a family member needed her. Verna was a loving mother to her children: son, Barry of Gray Creek, BC; and daughters: Marilyn Ashby of Surrey, BC and Carol (Jack) Billingham of Okotoks, AB. She is also survived by daughter-in-law Jessie (Arnold) Poole of Minnedosa, as well as ten grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She also leaves to mourn her sisters: Pearl Andrew and Irene Machan; and many nieces and nephews. Verna was predeceased by her husband Everett in 1973, her parents Jack and Mary McDonald; brothers: John, Thomas, Percival and Melville; sisters: Mary Jane Cosgrove, Catherine Jones and Ethel Lockhart. Viewing was held at Memories Chapel on Tuesday, September 7, 1999 from 7:00 p.m.- 8:00 p.m. Funeral service was held at the Chapel Wednesday, September 8. Interment followed in the Rosewood Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers were Ted Ashby, Dave Billingham, Gregg Billingham, Ken Scott, Don Smith and Ross Smith. Donations in memory of Verna may be made to the Canadian National Institute For The Blind, 354-10th Street Brandon, MB, R7A 4G1 or to a charity of one's choice.
