Obituary

KOMER: Surrounded by her family, it is with great sadness we announce the passing of our dear wife, mother, grandma and great grandma, Sophie on December 14, 2008 at the Brandon Regional Health Centre. Sophie was born January 30, 1925. Her childhood years were spent working hard helping out her family and learning the skills that led her to be the good cook she was. No one could beat her borscht, perogies, cabbage rolls or other traditional Polish dishes. She enjoyed her garden, and especially the pickling and cannings. After her schooling, she worked a short time in a local laundry facility. In 1948, she married Nick and they were blessed with three children. Her whole life, through many years of sickness with diabetes, was devoted to looking after Nick and raising her children; Wayne, Fran (Jack Jacobson) and Terry. One of the greatest joys in her life and some of the healthiest years, were spent helping to nurture her grandchildren, Jackie and Jared Jacobson. One wish in her life, which was fulfilled, was to share in the joy on their wedding days: Jackie to John, and Jared to Robin. Her grandkids blessed her with four beautiful great grandchildren, Ethan and Ella Guthrie and Halle and Jaxon Jacobson. Sophie's gentle ways and genuine kindness will be with them all forever. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Sophie was predeceased by; four brothers and five sisters. Nick and Sophie led a simple life and enjoyed sixty years of marriage. Due to diabetic complications, Sophie and Nick had to be separated the last two years with Sophie making Fairview her new home. Her quiet and gentle ways made it easy for her to be part of the Fairview family. Encouragement from all the staff, made her fit in very quickly, for which she and the families are truly thankful. Having a strong faith, she especially enjoyed bible study, attending church services, and looked forward to having coffee with her special friend, Helen Kozak. As Sophie had wished a private family service was held at St. Georges Anglican Church December 17, 2008 with Rev. Jim Brown officiating. Interment followed in the Brandon Cemetery Columbarium. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. George's Anglican Church, 1101 5th Street, Brandon, Manitoba, R7A 1C7. Expressions of sympathy may be made at www.memorieschapel.com. Arrangements were with Memories Chapel & Pre-Planning Centre, 727-0330.
