On Thursday, August 12, 2021, Sophie Evaskow (nee Chodak) peacefully passed away in Brandon with family by her side.
Sophie was born to Michael and Teena Chodak June 15, 1936 in the Pletura district of the Boulton Municipality, where she also attended Dniepro School. After leaving home, she lived and worked in Flin Flon, Winnipeg, and then Brandon where her longest employment was 20 years with United Cigars based in Woolco.
She married Walter Evaskow in 1956 and was widowed in 1970.
A very active person, Sophie enjoyed many activities including picking wild mushrooms and berries, women's church group, card games with family, fall suppers, Bar-B-Q's, reconnecting with distant relatives, and Floor Shuffle with great fun and comradery at Prairie Oasis.
Memorable family vacations were to Niagara Falls (honeymoon), Victoria and Vancouver, B.C., Ukraine, and Puerto Vallarta. Seeking "a Peaceful Place", she and her later life partner Mike Rogowski (deceased 2005) built a cabin in Waterhen and enjoyed the company of family and friends for many years.
A proud and avid gardener, she was continually complimented on her yard for its flowers, bushes, and vegetable garden. Her perogies, cabbage rolls, chocolate cake, pickles, and head cheese were loved by all.
Sophie is survived by her children Susan (Martin) Zuzens, Dianne (Steve) Costello, Jerry Evaskow and Barbara Ewaskow; 12 grandchildren and 10 (soon to be 11) great grandchildren; brother Peter (Judy) Chodak and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and their families. She was predeceased by her parents, husband Walter, daughter Janice (Richard) McLean, son Michael and siblings Wesley, Mary Regush, Anne Regush, Stanley, Mabel Simcoe, Rose Baron, Nell Pulak, Edward, Michael, and Russell "Murray".
Evening Prayers were said Thursday August 19, 2021 and the Graveside Service, attended by many friends and family, was held at the Brandon Cemetery on Friday, August 20, 2021. Both services were beautifully done by celebrant Rev. Fr. Yaroslav Strukhylak and cantor Stella Fedeniuk. Urn bearer was Jerry Evaskow.
Sophie had meaningful, long-term relationships with so many people and she will be forever in our "Eternal Memory".
