"Though it's cold and lonely in the deep dark night, I can see paradise by the dashboard light"
Slade Alan Hoemsen, husband, dad, grandpa passed away on June 10, 2026, at Fairview Nursing Home in Brandon, Manitoba.
He made his home in Brandon with his beloved wife Sharon and was the proud son of the late Pete Hoemsen.
Slade was raised on the family farm three miles west of Elkhorn. Fondly known as the “Old Stonehouse on the Hill.” He worked on the farm through the late 1970’s before heading north to Tuktoyaktuk Northwest Territories, during the Arctic oil boom, where he worked for Dome Petroleum alongside his father, brother, and several friends from home.
He married Sharon in May 1983 and together they built their life in Elkhorn. They welcomed their daughter Kristen in August 1984, followed by their son Erich in 1987. During those years they worked side by side for the Village of Elkhorn and at Cactus Hills Campground before moving in 1992 to the family farm west of town.
Farming a quarter section and 80 acres was not easy, but he worked tirelessly. From cutting firewood to turning wrenches, he was never afraid to get his hands dirty. He enjoyed his animals and all the field work they required on his 4020 John Deere. In 2000 he and Sharon purchased the town’s Creamee, operating it as Sharona’s Creamee until 2006. He loved his coffee and ice cream.
They then sold both the farm and the business to retire and relocate to Brandon following their kids Kristen and Erich.
In Brandon he embraced one of his greatest joys, becoming Grandpa. He rarely missed an opportunity to support his grandchildren, proudly attending hockey, baseball, soccer, volleyball, figure skating, and many other activities whenever he could. Whether it was reading a book, throwing a ball, or riding a bike, he was there for the grandchildren. Same as he was to his own kids years ago.
He was diagnosed with Parkinsons in 2011 and that past few years it was aggressive. Slade faced it with strength and resilience, never letting on how hard things were for him.
Slade will be missed and lovingly remembered by his wife Sharon, daughter Kristen (Rick) their children; Drayson, Charleigh, and Aaliyah, son Erich (Keesy) their children Connor, Jaedyn, Kasidy, Alley, Sophie, Peyton and Piper.
In memory Slade we ask that you put in that old cassette; Eagles, Meatloaf, Rod Stewart, George Strait, or any other of the many he kept and S.T.O.P. “Spin Tires on Pavement.”
“Like a bat out of hell, I’ll be gone when the morning comes.”
A Private family service will be held.
