SPARLING: The death of Shirley Mary Sparling, dear wife of Gerry, occurred at the Brandon Regional Health Centre with her family by her side, on Thursday, October 24, 2002. Shirley was born in Cranbrook, BC on July 4, 1922, the daughter of Harvey and Ethel Brown. Shirley's father was employed with CPR, which resulted in much travel for her. She lived in Illinois, USA; Mission and North Bend, BC; and Souris, MB. Shirley received her schooling in Mission and North Bend, BC; Souris, and St. Michael's Academy in Brandon. She also attended Success Business College in Winnipeg and while living there worked for various business firms. In 1946 Shirley and Gerry were married and spent their years together in Neepawa, Winnipeg, Virden, and Brandon raising their two daughters, Dale and Myrna. Shirley enjoyed her involvement in community and church activities. Her many wonderful friendships buoyed her spirit. She also enjoyed teaching with the ESL (literacy) program; this brought her special pleasure and developed many endearing friendships. The greatest joy of Shirley's life was the time spent with her family. Shirley is survived by her loving husband of 56 years; Gerry, daughters; Dale Harding of Calgary, AB and Myrna (Ed) Lesko, Grande Prairie, AB, half-sisters; Eleanor (Joe) Lenzner of Oliver, BC and Barbara (Graeme) Brett of West Vancouver, BC, half-brother; Barry (Judy) Brown of Toronto, ON. She also leaves her grandchildren: Shara (Phil) Doherty, Christie (Pete) Besselt, both of Calgary, AB, Geri (Mike) Schulze, Richelle (Dave) Huls, Toni (Justin) Thomson and Eddie Lesko all of Grande Prairie, AB, great grandchildren: Jason and Ryan Doherty, Mackenzie Schulze, Hailey and Jennifer Huls, and Kaitlyn Thomson, brother-in-law; Laurence (Dub) Mundell of Brandon, sister-in-law; Evalyn Giem of Calgary and numerous nieces and nephews. Shirley was predeceased by her parents; Harvey and Ethel Brown, stepmother; Marie Brown, sister; Elizabeth (Betty) Mundell, and brother; Ray Brown. The Funeral Service was held at Memories Chapel, 330-18th Street North on Monday, October 28, 2002. The Rev. Jim Brown of St. George's Anglican Church officiated. Flowers are gratefully declined, friends who wish may make a donation in Shirley's memory to a charity of choice. Shirley's kind, gentle and giving spirit touched many lives.
