Satu Marita Speelman

Satu Marita Speelman, 61, of Brandon, passed away peacefully on March 18, 2026, surrounded by family and friends at Brandon Regional Health Centre.

Satu was born on January 29, 1965, to Teuvo and Helena Hellesten in Kuusankoski, Finland. She later moved to Canada with her family, settling in The Pas, where she attended and graduated from high school. After graduation, Satu moved to Brandon with her good friend Liz (“Lillyput”).

Satu dedicated 37 years of her career as an Executive Assistant at Koch Fertilizer. She was well known for her generosity and strong support of community events, always helping with donations and sponsorships. Many business owners and workers came to know and appreciate Satu, and she remained deeply committed to the work she loved.

Satu met the love of her life, Chris Speelman, and they were married at their favourite place, Pelican Lake. Together, they became known for their warm and lively gatherings at their cottage and home in Brandon. Guests fondly remember the classic Styrofoam containers served at Speelman celebrations. Satu and Chris also shared a love of travel, exploring destinations around the world, with Barbados holding a special place in their hearts as a cherished yearly winter getaway.

Anyone who knew Satu knew she was kind, loving, and compassionate. She had a deep passion for helping others and was a constant source of positivity. She will be missed more than words can express by all who knew and loved her.

Satu is survived by her stepson, Jason (Maggie) Scott; her niece, Marika (Donnie) Hellsten; and extended family members Denika, Ashton, and Everleigh. She is also survived by Gill (Pete) Speelman, Bayley (Zaina) Kerbis, Kruis and Kohin, Amy (Quincy) Kerbis, Curt (Arlene) Speelman Keifer, and Conner. She also leaves behind many special friends: Laurie Yeo, Connie Lawrence, and Charlene McKechnie, along with many others too numerous to name but dearly remembered. Satu was predeceased by her husband, Chris Speelman; her parents, Teuvo and Helena Hellesten; and her sister, Sari Hellsten.

In memory of Satu, contributions may be made to the Palliative Care Unit at Brandon Regional Health Centre.

In accordance with her wishes, no formal funeral service will be held. A memorial in her honour will take place at a later date.
