Sarah Jane (nee Barbour) passed away on Sunday, June 24, 2001 at Hillcrest Place at the age of 95 years. Sarah was born in Belfast, Ireland on June 1, 1906. She came to Canada from Ireland by boat when she was seven years old with her parents and two brothers. Sarah's father homesteaded in the Poplar Point area. Sarah married Wilfred Bruce and they raised a family of four while she helped with work on the family farm in Poplar Point. After her children were all grown, she went to work in the Portage General Hospital. Sarah's greatest dream had been to become a nurse, which never happened, but loved her work and many friends at the Portage Hospital. She retired and moved to Brandon where she resided until her death. Sarah enjoyed her curling, knitting, skating, dancing and music. She is survived by her one son, Brian (Beth) Bruce, three daughters, Muriel (Doug) Clark; Edith Cooper and Virginia Cyr; eleven grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren. She was pre-deceased by her husband, Wilfred, grandson, Michael Cyr, sons-in-law, Jack and Roger and daughter-in-law Marian. The funeral ceremony was held at St. Anne's Anglican Church, Poplar Point, Manitoba on Wednesday, June 27, 2001 at 2:30 p.m. The Rev. Bradley Elliott officiated. Pallbearers were Blair Bruce, and Kristin Kidd, Darcy and Susan Ready, Beverly Cooper-Soprovich and Michelle Cyr-Whiting. Interment followed in the parish cemetery.
