Hutton (Grieve): Ruby Olive, 94 years of age, passed away peacefully at her residence at Fairview Home on Saturday, October 19, 2002. Ruby was born to Austin and Lovina Swerdfeger at Lauder, Manitoba on July 24, 1908 and she attended Truro and Lauder schools. In December 1926, she married Oliver Grieve and together raised five children. For many years they lived in Brandon for the winters, returning to Lauder to farm in the summer. Ruby worked many long hours, devoting her time to raising her family and working on the farm. Oliver passed away in June 1963. In 1965, Ruby decided to make a permanent move to Brandon, where she remained until 1977 when she married Geoffrey Hutton of Virden. Ruby and Geoff had 22 good years together, doing some traveling and visiting and playing cards with their many friends at Virden. The highlight of the day was going to the Chicken Chef for coffee. Ruby had a good sense of humor and loved to tell jokes. She was well liked by all who knew her and had many friends. Besides her parents, Ruby was predeceased by her two sons, Alvin and Elmer in 1949; two brothers, Herbert and Howard Swerdfeger; her first husband, Oliver Grieve and her second husband, Geoffrey Hutton. Ruby is survived by her three daughters, Lila (Albert) Burgess of Winnipeg and their children; Carol (Glen) Anderson, Bob (Debbie) Burgess, Garry (Michelle) Burgess and Kathy (John) Jongerius; Vivian (Ike) Prokaska of Ottawa and their son Joel (Linda) Prokaska; and Edna (Gordon) Kennedy of Forrest and their children; Sheryl (Drew) Livingston, Karen (Rene') deDelley, and Brian (Miho) Kennedy. She is also survived by 17 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Ruby is survived by her stepsons, Cecil, Fred (Charlotte), and Harvey (Mona) Hutton and their families. Funeral service was held in the Lauder United Church on Wednesday, October 23 at 2:00 p.m. with Beth McLean, D.M. officiating. Interment followed in the Lauder Cemetery. Friends who wish to make a donation in memory of Ruby may do so to the Multiple Sclerosis Society Brandon & District Chapter, Unit B, 920 -6th Street, Brandon, MB, R7A 3P8 or to a charity of choice.
