Obituary

MAWER: Rodger James, husband of Anne Mawer (nee Power), passed away on Monday, May 26, 2008 at the Brandon Regional Health Centre at the age of sixty-five. Rodger was born in Hamiota, Manitoba and raised on the family farm in the Tarbolton area. Rodger was predeceased by his father Jack Mawer; mother Anne Mawer and brother-in-law Ray Power. He is survived by his wife Anne Mawer; daughters Melanie (Trent) Melinchuk, Liana (Brian) Hickman; son Ryan (Dawn) Mawer; grandson Jack Mawer; sister Peggy (Jack) Chapman; brother Ralph (Arlee) Mawer; sister-in-law Barbara Angus and family as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Rodger farmed in the Tarbolton area after completing his Diploma of Agriculture at the University of Manitoba. In 1965, he married Anne Power of the Oak River area and continued to farm until weeks before his passing. Farming was his passion and he had a great love of the land and animals. His horse Duke was his best buddy and there were too many special pets to name. His herd of Limousin cattle were his pride and joy and he had many accomplishments in the cattle business. He also enjoyed helping his own and neighbourhood children with their 4-H calves and horses and enjoyed sharing his knowledge of livestock. He tried to be the best neighbour he could be, and a steward of the land. He served his community as a council member for several years for the RM of Daly. He was a founding member of the Little Saskatchewan Conservation District. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, trap shooting, sharing fish stories and swapping tales over a coffee. He always had a joke and was known to break into song on occasions. Later in life, he enjoyed trying to grow the biggest, earliest, and best tomatoes in the neighbourhood. Rodger fought a long and difficult battle with numerous health problems with humor, tenacity, and courage. A Come & Go Memorial Reception will be held at Imperial Ball Room, Victoria Inn, 3550 Victoria Avenue West on Friday, May 30, 2008 from 1:00 pm -3:00 pm. As per Rodger's wishes, cremation will take place. A portion of his remains will be interred in the Tarbolton Cemetery at a private family graveside. Another portion will also be scattered on his beloved farm by his family. Donations in memory of Rodger may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R3B 0V9.
