Obituary
SLIMMON: The death of Randy Slimmon of Brandon, occurred Friday March 17, 2006 at the Assiniboine Centre, Brandon. The Ceremony to Celebrate Randy's Life will be held at Central United Church 327 8th Street, on Wednesday March 22, 2006 at 2:00 P.M. Interment will follow at the Brandon Cemetery. Flowers are gratefully declined, donations in Randy's memory may be made to Brandon Regional Health Foundation, Palliative Services, 150 McTavish Avenue East, Brandon, MB R7A 2B3. SLIMMON: Randal "Randy" Dean Slimmon passed away peacefully and with dignity Friday, March 17, 2006 at the Brandon Regional Health Centre, after a 2 1/2 year battle with malignant melanoma. Randy was born in Hamiota, MB on March 18, 1960. He attended school in Shoal Lake, MB and finished his Grade 10 education in Swan River, MB. Randy moved to Brandon, MB at the age of 16 and held various jobs including working at Dyck's Transfer, where he met and co-worked with his future wife Norma. Randy soon after got a job at Transx Ltd. in August of 1979. He and Norma's romance grew and they were married on June 7, 1980. Randy worked for the Transx Group of Companies from Aug 1979 till he was forced to leave work Oct 2005. He worked at the various groups of companies at Transx, working at Coolx Transport and then finally DeckX Transport till he was forced to leave when his illness worsened. Randy had a love of the road and for people. He never hesitated to help a person in need along the way and many deep friendships have been formed over the years. As he put it, most people truck to live, but he "lived to truck". Randy received honors along the way in his trucking career. He received his 1, 2 and 3 Million Mile Awards, Driver of the Year Award, and a trip to the Dominican Republic for 20+ years of service. His wife and sons are very proud of the many miles he travelled during his long career in the job he loved so much. Randy was extremely proud of his two sons, Scott and Kyle. They meant the world to him, and although his job took him away from home for long periods of time, he always would phone them on the road. He always tried to make it to events the boys were involved in such as Youth Bowling and school events. He was extremely proud of Scott's girlfriend Jennifer Bell, whom he thought of as his daughter. Randy had a great personality and had a special way of making people comfortable. Even if someone was having a bad day, he'd joke and say "somebody needs a hug" and the person would be instantly smiling. He was a very generous man, and we will miss his sense of humor, and quick wit. Randy is survived by: his devoted and loving wife of 25 1/2 years, Norma (nee Leader); sons, Scott (Jennifer) and Kyle. His mother and father, Betty and Laverne Slimmon; brother, Gary (Nadine) Slimmon; sister, Joan (Danny) Parthenay; four nephews, one niece, two great nieces and three great nephews; his mother and father-in-law, Lynne and Lloyd Leader, aunts, uncles and numerous cousins also survive. The Funeral Service will be held at Central United Church, 327-8th Street, on Wednesday, March 22, 2006 at 2:00 pm. Internment will follow in the Brandon Cemetery. Pallbearers will be: Tony Trylinski, Paul Hoeppner, Lawrence Miko, Garry Burdett, Bob Stewart and Joe Nayanookeeshik. Honorary pallbearers will be all in attendance. Friends who wish may make a donation in memory of Randy to the Brandon Regional Health Centre, Palliative Services, 150 McTavish Avenue East, Brandon, Manitoba R7A 2B3.
