Obituary

The death of Peter Merko, beloved husband of Mary, passed away peacefully at his residence at Rideau Park Personal Care Home, Tuesday, September 3, 2002. Divine Liturgy will be Celebrated at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church, on Friday, Sept 6, 2002 at 10:00 a.m. Celebrants will be Fr. Victor Yakowchuk and Fr. Peter Brezden, assisted by Cantor Mr. Peter Romanik. Interment will follow in the Brandon Cemetery. Friends who wish may make a donation in memory of Peter to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, 437 - 9th Street, Brandon, Manitoba, R7A 4A9 or Rideau Park Personal Care Home, 525 Victoria Avenue East, Brandon, Manitoba, R7A 6S9. Peter Merko, resident of Rideau Park Personal Care Home, formerly of Dauphin, Manitoba, peacefully passed away at his residence on Tuesday, September 3, 2002. He was born on March 21, 1917 in the Kulish District of Ethelbert. He had early schooling in Ethelbert, and then worked for some dairy farms in Winnipeg. He took some basic mechanics courses but acquired many of his other skills with little formal training. During his long life he worked in auto repair, shoe repair, barbering, carpentry and watch repair. He loved all aspects of nature - its beauty, diversity and wonder. In good health he enjoyed travel and especially loved British Columbia. He loved people and would chat with everyone and loved to tell riddles. He is survived by his wife; Mary (nee Chawrun), daughters; Shirley (Rev. Peter Brezden), Diane Holowick (Kyle), grandchildren; Noel (Maureen) Brezden, Julian Brezden, Melanie Holowick (Kevin), Amber (Rob) Pink, Ashley and Megan Holowick; great great granddaughter; Emily Brezden. Other surviving members are sisters; Mary Merko, Anne Ewanchuk, Olga Lylyk and Vicky Walsh, along with numerous brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents; Prokop and Mary (nee Kajda) Merko and brother Joseph Merko. Divine Liturgy was celebrated at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church, Friday, September 6, 2002 at 10:00 a.m. Celebrants were Fr. Victor Yakowchuk and Fr. Peter Brezden. Cantor was Mr. Peter Romanik. Interment followed in the Brandon Cemetery. Honorary pallbearers were: Kevin Headland and Ron Drabchuk. Active pallbearers were: Noel Brezden, Gordon Eftoda, Peter Drabchuk, Bill Chawrun, Peter Marceniuk and Rob Pink.
