Patricia "Pat" Arlene Josephson, nee Cornell, (Aug.25, 1944 - Feb.28, 2004). Born and raised in Brandon, Pat was famous for her smile, laugh and instant friendships. She lived a life of skating, organizing and managing, but always with an irresistible personal touch. Her values, beliefs and ethics were a model for many. On Aug. 15, 1964 Pat Cornell married Brian Josephson. They had 39 years to cherish each other. Their children Tammy and Terry soon came to bring more purpose and love to their lives. They were always a close family. Aside from this, Pat became a figure skating judge for 27 years. She became the only single panel gold test judge outside of Winnipeg. Pat found many ways to contribute to the world of skating. She held all kinds of positions on all levels. She organized major ice shows. She wrote a newspaper column, the provincial skater's magazine, seminar plans, and judging handbooks. Pat worked at the Lethbridge Canada Winter Games so she could be there for Tammy. Tammy put the medal she won to rest in Pat's coffin with her as she felt without her Mom she would never have achieved it.
Administratively, she helped shape "Regional" and "Provincial" competition formats. She co-chaired the "Canadians" in 1982. Pat became the bookkeeper/office manager of the new Keystone Center, the Bid Committee for 1979 Canada Winter Games and the Assiniboine Community College Students' Association. She trained and guided 23 new executives. Without her perhaps there would not have been a Son of a Beach volleyball tournament, a hockey team, a monster Bingo, intramural sports, major cash draw fundraisers, the Alumni Association, the Ambassador's Club, Kampus Korner, OBO security, successes on student appeals, private counseling, personal loans, an ACCSA handbook each September, or the famous graduation banquets. Even after she retired, sick and blind, she co-chaired the 3 day Homecoming 2001: a Celebration of 40 years of ACC. Pat received the following awards: Membership in the Manitoba Honour Society from the CFSA; President's National Volunteer Honour Roll from the CFSA; Sportsman of the Year Runner Up in the Brandon Sun; Certificate of Appreciation from the Native Students' Organization; Canada's 125th Anniversary Commemorative Award for outstanding volunteer work; and YWCA's Woman of Distinction Award for 2002. Pat's greatest accomplishment in her eyes is her children, who she loves dearly, and have become outstanding people in their own fields, Tammy Fournier in her coaching career and Terry in his engineering career. They loved her from the depths of their hearts. Pat cherished her grandchildren Danielle Fournier, Nicholas and Julianna Josephson. Pat is survived by her mother Audrey Cornell who was in contact daily and a best friend all of her life. They shared so much together. She is sorely missed by family members Don (Carol) Cornell and Melody, sister Linda Petry and sons Chris and Bryan. Her father, Arnold C. Cornell, met her at Heaven's gate. Also surviving Pat are Terry's wife Maria and her mother Dora Bertone and family, the best of in-laws. Tammy's friend Grant McKay mourns our loss with us. But missing her the most is her husband , Brian." I see
you every day in so many ways that it comforts me. You are my best friend, the heart of my heart, and my soulmate. I will love you forever." Speakers honouring Pat at the funeral were: Rev. Don Hudson, Lisa Walker, Meta Kaiser, Terry Josephson, Tammy Fournier and Pall Bearers: Jason Forman, Dwayne McConnell, Dennis Smith, and George McLeod. Murray Menzies and Bob Ferguson fulfilled the team. Internment was at the Brandon Cemetery March 3, 2004. Though Pat suffered through the extremes of diabetes, her cause was compassion for our 3 year old granddaughter who has leukemia. Pat has become our guiding light and Guardian Angel. If you wish to send a memorial gift in Pat's name, send it to Friends of Julianna Banana, P.O. Box 50040, Brandon, Manitoba R7A 7E4 or CancerCare Manitoba, P.O. Box 2248 Station, Main, Winnipeg, Manitoba R3C 9Z9. Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to memorieschapel@mts.net.
