The Breen Family

BREEN: The death of Norman Orville Breen occurred at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Monday, October 16, 2006. Norman was born in Brandon on January 27, 1934 to Oriole Ackney and Joseph Breen. He received his education in Brandon and graduated from the Brandon Collegiate Institute in 1952. During this time, and for the rest of his life, Norm was very active in athletics. He played youth hockey in Brandon and enjoyed senior hockey with the Molson Pioneers. After graduating from BCI he began work for the Home Gas Company and then at the North Hill Motel for his father-in-law. Outgoing and seeking something new, he then began selling life insurance for Wawanesa Life. At this time he was an active member of the Kinsmen Club. Eventually he moved on to become a grocer and thus began the adventure of Norm's Grocery. In 1988, he moved to Whistler, British Columbia and became resident manager of Whisky Jack Condos. Retiring in 2000, he and his wife Diane returned to Brandon. Norm was a very loving husband, involved father, and devoted grandfather. When growing up, the family shared many days at the lake, evenings at the drive-inn theatre and took ski trips in the winter. Norm was always driving his family to sporting events and cheering the kids on. When Norm's health and eyesight failed, he made evening calls to his family to describe his latest culinary masterpiece, or to talk about his beloved Vancouver Canucks. Norm often called on Saturday mornings, just to say hi. Those calls will be greatly missed. In 1954, Norman married Elaine Relf of Brandon and they had three children; they separated in 1982 after 28 years together. Norm married Diane Dugas on June 6, 1986. This union resulted in 20 years of marriage, happy even in the recent times of serious illness. Norm was pre-deceased by his mother and father; mother-in-law Coo Still; infant brother Martin; sisters Patricia and Eunice Breen; brother-in-law and best friend Ray Relf; brother-in-law Don Relf; step-son Brent Dugas. He is survived by his wife Diane; son Dennis (Valerie) Breen of Whistler, B.C.; daughters Juel (Don) Bell of Brandon and Loree (Gilles) Bellefleur of Saint John, New Brunswick; step-son Matthew Dugas of Shilo; grandchildren Lana Breen of Austin, Texas, Leah Breen of Vancouver, Ryley and Brandy Jones of Saint John, Amy Breen of Brandon, Devin Bell of Brandon, Jodan Dugas of Halifax, and Brandon and Keisia Dugas of Weyburn. He is also survived by Ted Giles of Ladysmith, B.C.; Elaine Breen of Brandon; Mother Relf of Brandon; sister-in-law Betty-Anne Relf of Lethbridge; sister-in-law Betty Relf of Brandon; sister-in-law Dolores (Barry) Rost of Florida; and brother-in-law Bob (Georgia) Relf of Calgary; as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. After Norm's eyesight failed he kept in touch with all of them through many phone calls. He truly enjoyed the family friendship. Norm's memorial service was held at Memories Chapel on Saturday, October 21, 2006. The Rev. David Wilson officiated.
