Obituary

GRAY: The death of Nelson Andrew Gray, beloved husband of Shirley, occurred in the city on Tuesday, August 5, 2008. A time of visitation for family and friends will be held at Memories Chapel on Friday, August 8, 2008 from 7:00 pm. to 8:00 pm. The Funeral Ceremony will be held at St. George's Anglican Church, 1011 5th Street on Saturday, August 9, 2008 at 2:00 pm. The Rev. Jim Brown will officiate. Interment will follow in the Veterans section of the Brandon Cemetery. Flowers are gratefully declined. Friends who wish may make a donation in memory of Nelson to the Canadian Cancer Society, Manitoba Division, 193 Sherbrook Street, Winnipeg, MB R3C 9Z9. Complete obituary information will follow. GRAY: Surrounded by his loving family, Nelson Gray passed away at home on August 5, 2008, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Montreal on June 8, 1930 where he spent his early years. Nelson joined the Canadian Armed Forces in 1951. After basic training, he made the army his career for twenty-three years. While in the army he served overseas in Korea and Germany. After postings in New Brunswick, Petawawa, and C.F.B. Shilo, he retired in 1973. Nelson worked as a civil servant for fourteen years at base supply, retiring in 1990. He and his wife Shirley spent many happy times vacationing in Nova Scotia. He was predeceased by his mother Frances Forrest and step father Jim Forrest. He is survived by his loving wife of fifty-six years, Shirley (Cooper); sons Jim (Sharon) of Chater, Brian of Victoria, B.C., and Roy of Brandon; daughter Valerie (Blair) Zurba; grandchildren Rick (Vivian) Gray, Rochelle (Mike) Posthmus, Justin Birin and Sara Birin; great-grandchildren Matthew Gray and Benjamin Posthmus. The Funeral Ceremony was held at St. George's Anglican Church on Saturday, August 9, 2008. Rev. Jim Brown officiated. Readings were read by sister-in-law, Alice Gillis of Nova Scotia and close friend Dan McKinnon of Brandon. The church choir led the hymns with a solo by Alexe Jones. The "Last Post" was sounded at the close of the service. Pallbearers were Vic White, Dan MacKinnon, Wayne Drosdoski, Rick Gray, Mike Posthmus, and Justin Birin. A private family interment took place in the Veterans section of the Brandon Cemetery. A reception was held in the church hall, prepared by the ladies of the church. Flowers are gratefully declined. The family of the late Nelson Gray would like to extend thanks to Dr. Groves, CancerCare MB, Emergency and 400 at the BRHC for the excellent care they gave Nelson. Thanks also to the Palliative Care team, and Home Care Coordinator Kylie, for their care and compassion. Thanks also to everyone who called or visited, sent flowers, cards or food. Your loving concern helped to make a difficult time so much easier to bear. Special thanks to Rev. Jim Brown, Vern Schneider and the Korean Veterans Association. Also thanks to pallbearers Vic White, Dan MacKinnon, Wayne Drosdoski, and grandsons Rick, Mike, and Justin, and all who helped in any way.
