Obituary

On Monday, April 29th, 2024, Neil Couling, age 85 years passed away at the Wawanesa Personal Care Home.

Born and raised in Wawanesa, MB to Bill and Vera Couling, Neil grew up playing hockey and football and riding horses with his brother Glen. Neil's love for horses carried on into his adult years and he owned many Quarter Horses which he took to local shows for halter and pleasure classes. He was a member of the Manitoba Quarter Horse Association for many years, and he was one of the founding members of the Manitoba Quarter Horse Racing Association. It was in Wawanesa where Neil met the love of his life Myrna, and they married in May of 1959. They enjoyed 56 years of marriage and their love for one another served as an inspiration and role model for their children.

Neil worked at the Wawanesa Co-op until he was offered a job at P. Quintaine & Son livestock in Brandon where he worked for 50 years. Neil and Myrna raised 4 daughters and family was always Neil's first priority. Neil was an incredibly hard worker, and he passed his work ethic on to his children as well. It brought him great joy to find ways to entertain and bring laughter to his 4 daughters, 4 sons-in-law, 9 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. He went to great lengths to do so, creating backyard skating rinks, slip and slides, and instigating water fights with water hoses and super-soakers. Neil and Myrna loved to entertain family and friends at their home and at their cabin at Oak Lake, MB. They enjoyed several trips to Hawaii, Cuba and Las Vegas as well as trips to visit their daughters in Alberta and the USA.

Remaining to cherish Neil's memory are his daughters, Barbara (Morley) Jack, Faye Couling (Gary Quinn), Kerri (Peter) Metelski, Debbie Jo (Ron) Fontaine; grandchildren, Cherise (Robert), Lindsay (Ryan), Marlee, Rebecca (Nick), Tamara, Jessica, Caitlin (Taylor), Jordan, Eric; and great-grandchildren Taylor, Damon, Isaiah, Jack, Zachery, Everleigh, Brooke. Also surviving sister in laws, Greta (Gene) Melnychuk, Myrna Scribner and many adored nieces and nephews.

Neil was predeceased by his wife Myrna Couling, parents Bill Couling and Vera Munn; stepfather Dalton Munn, in-laws Jim and Edith Wilson, brother Glen Couling, brothers-in-law, Herb Yeo, Julian Heirman; and sister-in-law Elaine Heirman.

A private family interment will take place at Rosewood Memorial Gardens. A time of gathering and refreshments will be held on Saturday, May 4, 2024, from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m., at the Victoria Inn, Salon 1, 3550 Victoria Ave. Brandon, MB.

We wish to thank the outstanding staff at Victoria Landing and Wawanesa Personal Care Home for the wonderful care they provided Neil.

If friends so desire, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society Manitoba www.alzheimer.mb.ca.
