Murray James ThomsonMarch 8, 1957 – January 1, 2026

It’s with great sorrow to announce Murray James Thomson, at the age of 69, passed peacefully at the Brandon Regional Health Authority with his family by his side. Murray had an incredibly huge heart and fought a long battle with Cancer. Murray will be deeply missed by his loving wife Colleen; siblings: Sharon (Michael), Brian (Lisa); children: Connor (Glynis), Stacey (Marty), Sarah (Tyler), Shayne; and his grandchildren: Caleb, Kinley, Jaxton, Oakden, Chael, Colton, Kyra, and Brielle who he loved very much!

Murray was born in Carman, Manitoba but grew up on the farm near Miami, Manitoba. By the age of 15, Murray was an extremely accomplished hockey player and moved to Selkirk to play for the Selkirk Steelers. His team was very successful and went on to win the Centennial Cup, which was one of his biggest accomplishments and he really enjoyed his time with his team. He continued his hockey career with a move to Brandon and played for the Brandon Wheat Kings. He was the proud captain of his team for the 1975-76 season.

After his years of playing hockey Murray took a job at McGavins for a short period and then took a job at Coke-a-Cola where he made many friends he kept in touch with to this day. Murray took a leap and decided to join the Canada Post Office where he worked until 2016 when he took sick and decided to retire.

Murray married the love of his life, Colleen in the summer of 2004, and they enjoyed every moment together. They always hosted amazing family gatherings and cooked fantastic meals, where everyone as always welcome, and no one was “to go home hungry”. They loved to spend summers at the lake, and when they both retired travelling to Mexico.

One of Murray's biggest joys was spending time at Clear like with his wife Colleen, and all his children and grandchildren, and of course all his lake friends. If it was a beautiful day, Murray would have the boat ready, cooler packed with snacks and ready to go, and be the first one on the lake at “Thomson Beach”, which everyone called because he was always there.

Murray was an amazing athlete and excelled in baseball, hockey, and water skiing. As a father and grandfather, he shared his traits and love of sports with his family. He loved spending days on the boat pulling all the kids on the tube, kneeboard, skiing, etc. He also never missed a day at the rink, soccer field, or baseball field, rain or shine to watch all his grandkids, and he was the proudest grandpa and papa ever.

After his retirement Murray and Colleen took 3 vacations to Puerto Vallarta, where they had so much fun exploring and soaking up the sun, with their close friends the Wilsons and met new friends along the way.

Murray was predeceased by his father Jim, mother Shirley, mother-in-law Norma Jean, and sister Sherry-Lynn.

Murray had a long journey with cancer; he was very courageous and always had a positive attitude. Our family would sincerely like to thank Dr. Moller from Cancer Care and Dr. Kaiser from the Palliative unit at the BRHA as well as some amazing nurses, Bev, Lisa, and Kenadee.
