MITCHELL: Minnie, mother of Ida, Cherry and Ivor, passed away peacefully at her home in Edmonton on September 6, 2002. Minnie was born on June 3, 1920 in Cape Town, South Africa, the daughter of Lydia and Adam Tobitt. She attended Wesley Teachers College and taught for 30 years in Cape Town before and during her marriage to Herbert Mitchell. Minnie was widowed in 1963. In 1966 she went to England and taught for a year in Southhampton. She returned to South Africa and taught for another two years before immigrating to Canada in 1970 at age 50. She worked as a nurse's aide at Brandon General Hospital and then enrolled in the social services course at Assiniboine Community College. She graduated with the gold proficiency medal of which she was very proud. She commenced work with the Manitoba Department of Health and Social Development in Thompson, and after a year transferred to Brandon where she worked until her retirement. Minnie's pride and joy was her garden, she especially loved roses. Her home was always open to friends for whom she would prepare her delicious curries and other South African dishes. She loved to bake and her marmalade was much sought after. Minnie was a strong woman of practicality and common sense who had faced much adversity. She had an abiding faith in God. Before moving to Edmonton she was an elder at First Presbyterian Church in Brandon and at the time of her passing was a member of the First Presbyterian Church Westmount in Edmonton. Minnie leaves to mourn her daughters; Ida (Brian) Gibson of Edmonton, Cherry (Frank) Hunt of Brandon, and son Ivor Mitchell of Mexico. She also leaves her grandchildren; Richard (Anita) Gibson of Yellowknife, Robbie (Karen) Gibson, great grandson; Ethan, of Toronto, Karen (Doug) Hovde, great granddaughter; Nikayla, and Christopher Hunt of Brandon. She also leaves her sister; Ivy Appolis and special friends; Hedy And Stephanie Mueller and Colleen Seymour all of Brandon. Memorial services were held in Edmonton on September 12, and in Brandon on September 14, 2002 with Reverend Dale Woods of First Presbyterian Church officiating. At her request, Minnie's cremated remains will be interred with her husband Herbert in Cape Town, South Africa. Donations in memory of Minnie may be made to a charity of one's choice. Arrangements were with Memories Chapel & Pre-Planning Centre, 727-0330.
