Obituary

Mervin Todoruk passed away on Friday, November 19, 2021 at the Brandon Regional Health Centre, at the age of 88 years, after a short illness.

Merv was predeceased by his parents John and Jennie, brother Allan, sister-in-law Iris, brothers-in-law Mike Babij and Larry Choptain. Left to mourn his passing are his wife of 62 years, Phyllis, sister Lillian of Dauphin, sisters-in-law Sylvia Choptain of Dauphin and Roseanna (Al) Lynch of North Vancouver, BC, along with several nieces and nephews.

Merv grew up in Ashville, MB and after completing his schooling, attended Business College. Upon completion, he became employed by the Manitoba Telephone System, taking him from Dauphin to Thompson, The Pas, Winnipeg and then to Brandon, where he retired in 1990. After that, he spent more time on the golf course, until mobility became an issue. Curling was also a sport he enjoyed very much. He loved to travel, vacationing in the Dominican Republic, Hawaii, numerous destinations in Mexico, Florida, The Bahamas, Cuba, Barbados, Arizona and South America; with Hawaii being his favourite. Cars were Merv's passion and pride. He was a member of St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church and the Canadian Ukrainian Men's Club for many years.

Prayers were said at Memories Chapel with the Canadian Ukraininan Men's Club as Honor Guard. The private family Divine Liturgy was celebrated at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church on Saturday, November 27, 2021 with Rev. Fr. Yaroslav Strukhlyak as Celebrant, organist Elsie Makwaychuk, Cantor Tony Yuriy, Cross Bearer Lawnie Halchyshak, Pallbearers were Lawrence Kristalovich, Nestor Zemliak, Lawrence Makwaychuk, Richard Derewianchuk, Don Kostiw and Bill Salyn.

Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations in memory of Mervin may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 1379 Kenaston Boulevard, Winnipeg, MB R3P 2T5 or to Diabetes Canada, #401 – 1 Wesley Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3C 4C6.

A public Prayer Service will be held at Memories Chapel, 330-18th Street North on Friday, November 26, 2021 at 7:00 p.m.. In compliance with Public Health Orders, proof of full immunization will be required at the Prayer Service and the Memorial Reception.

A private family Divine Liturgy will be celebrated at St. Mary’s Ukrainian Catholic Church on Saturday, November 27, 2021 with Rev. Fr. Yaroslav Strukhlyak as Celebrant. Interment will be at the Brandon Cemetery. A public Memorial Reception will follow at the Ukrainian Reading Hall, 1005 Assiniboine Avenue on Saturday, November 27, 2021 at 12:00 p.m. In compliance with Public Health Orders, proof of full immunization will be required at the Prayer Service and the Memorial Reception.
