To honor the life of Mary Smylski, we are reminded of a woman whose journey began on a farm south of Candiac, Saskatchewan, on August 5, 1939, and touched the lives of many until her peaceful passing on Friday, February 23, 2024.
Mary's upbringing was one of simplicity and hard work, growing up in a small farmhouse alongside her five sisters and two brothers. In those days, buggies and sleighs were the primary modes of transportation, and the values instilled in her during those early years shaped the course of her life. She learned from a young age that hard work was the pathway to success, a lesson she carried with her throughout her entire life.
Her educational journey took her from the classroom of Netherby Rural School to the higher grades in Montmartre, Saskatchewan, and eventually to Living Word Bible School in Swan River, Manitoba. It was there that Mary's deep faith began to take root and flourish, shaping her character and guiding her path forward.
For 36 years, Mary dedicated herself to serving others as a nurses' aide at the Brandon Mental Health Centre, retiring in 1995. Her compassion, kindness, and unwavering commitment to those in need left a lasting mark on the lives of countless patients and colleagues alike.
Beyond her professional endeavors, Mary was deeply involved in various organizations dedicated to serving the Lord. She was an alumna of Living Word Bible School, and her presence was felt within the community of Bethel Temple/Bethel Christian Assembly, where her faith found expression in fellowship and service.
Mary's interests extended beyond her work and her faith. She had a green thumb like no other, her gardening skills were legendary. Whether nurturing vegetables or coaxing flowers to bloom, she had a magical touch that could make any plant thrive under her care.
In the early 80's, Alfred Smylski a quiet bachelor caught Mary's eye and their life paths came together to include 41 years of marriage. Mary and Alfred worked hard together and built a strong friendship which included adventures in many countries.
Mary will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Alfred Smylski; son, David (Wanda) Cookson; grandsons, Zachary Cookson and Joshua Cookson; sisters, Sophie Raczynski, Annie Englot, Pauline (Brian) Metruk, Kathy (Murray)Lister, brother, Joseph Zabalski and brother-in-law, Tom Yakielashek, and sister-in-law Hazel Goodell.
Mary was predeceased by her parents, Jennie and William Zabalski; brothers, John Zabalski and Steve Zabalski; and sisters, Josie Yakielashek, and Stella Zabalski;
As we bid farewell to Mary Smylski, let us remember her as a woman of faith, compassion, and unwavering dedication. May her legacy of hard work, kindness, and love continue to inspire us all in the days ahead. Though she may no longer be with us in body, her spirit will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know her. Rest in peace, dear Mary. You will be deeply missed, but your memory will forever be cherished.
