Obituary

POTTER: After a short illness May Potter, nee Mary Elizabeth Sullivan, passed away August 14, 2000 at the Brandon Regional Health Centre. Mother was born September 17, 1908 in Gainsborough, Saskatchewan to parents, James and Rachel Sullivan who homesteaded in the District of Ashgrove. In 1912 her only brother, John, died of influenza and the well-developed family farm was eventually sold. She loved growing up on the farm and in later years prairie landscapes inspired her paintings. In high school she was awarded a Governor General's medal and after graduation she completed teacher training in Regina. She never taught, but chose instead to marry Edwin Potter, raise children and to assist with the family business. After her husband's untimely death in 1958, she successfully carried on the hardware business herself. In 1963 she retired from Carievale, Saskatchewan to Brandon, Manitoba where she indulged her love of reading, travel, painting in oil, and being a fond grandmother. In her last several decades she played bridge with a passion and her bridge partners became an important part of her life. Mother was the center of our family life which included weekly Sunday lunches and special celebrations of all sorts. At age 91 she prepared our Christmas dinner. Her strength, wisdom and wry wit will be sorely missed by her friends, McDiarmid Drive neighbours and family: son Jim (Grace); her grandson's Doug and Kevin; daughter Lynn Whidden; and her grandchildren Richard and Rachel Whidden. Funeral service will be held at Memories Chapel, 330-18th Street N., on Thursday, August 17, 2000 at 1:30 p.m. Interment will follow at a later date at the Carievale Cemetery in Carievale, Saskatchewan. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations in memory of May may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 415-1st Street, Brandon, R7A 2W8 or to a charity of choice. Arrangements are with Memories Chapel & Pre-Planning Centre, 727-0330.
