GOMPF: The death of Mary Evelyn "Evie"Gompf, formerly of Hobbs Manor, occurred at the Assiniboine Centre on Friday, November 26, 2004. Evelyn was born on the family farm north of Oak Lake on August 31, 1916, and was the youngest of seven children born to Herb and Martha Walton. Evelyn received her education at Hagyard School close to the family farm and at Oakwood High School in Oak Lake. In 1939 Evelyn married George Gompf and together they raised four children on their farm north of Oak Lake. She was a director on the first board of the Oak Lake Co-op Store. Evelyn was a loyal member of the UCW and was awarded a lifetime membership. In 1971, George and Evie moved from the family farm to Brandon and joined Knox United Church, where she quickly made many friends. She was a long time member of the choir and active in the UCW at Knox. Evelyn was also part of the choir that was recently started at Hobbs Manor. She enjoyed playing the piano, especially if young children were around to sing. She loved people, young and old, and kept in touch with family and friends through letters and cards. She held a special place in her heart for her many friends from Sioux Valley Reservation. Evelyn had a positive attitude and there was always a kind word for everyone. She could see the good in all folks and will be fondly remembered by all who knew her. Evelyn is survived by her daughter, Marlene (Otto) Penner; sons, Garnet (Nora), Karl (Monica) and Larry (Bev) Gompf; twelve grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother, Stuart (Dorothy) Walton and by many nephews and nieces. Evelyn was predeceased by her husband, George in 1997; her sisters, Verna (James) Moreland, Gladys (Douglas) Stevenson; brothers, Mervin (Mary), Eldon and Allen (Murial) Walton. The Funeral Ceremony was held at Knox United Church on Monday, November 29, 2004. Pam Dean officiated. Interment followed in the Johnston Cemetery, Oak Lake, Manitoba. Flowers are gratefully declined. Friends may make a donation in memory of Evelyn to the Westman Dreams for Kids Foundation, 1435 Princess Avenue, Brandon, Manitoba R7A 0R6 or a charity of choice.
