Obituary

ALLEN: Marie Lena Bonny Allen (nee Caplette) beloved wife of William, of Rivers, passed away at the Riverdale Health Centre on Saturday, September 2, 2000. Lena was born at Ste. Marthe, Saskatchewan on November 4, 1925. She attended school in Welby and Oak Knoll, SK and helped out on the family farm until she went to work. Lena married William Harold Allen in Rivers on November 27, 1954. They lived in Winnipeg for a short time then moved back to Rivers until 1962. They resided in Bradwardine from 1962 to 1971. They then moved to Comox, BC until 1973, when they returned to Rivers. Lena was employed in her early years at the Fort QuAppelle Sanitorium and later at Setter's Drug Store in Rivers. During her years in Rivers, Lena was a member of the Hospital Guild, the Legion Ladies Auxilary, the Catholic Parish Group and the Bowling League. She especially enjoyed her family, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Lena also enjoyed bingo, her garden and flowers, sewing, knitting, embroidery, reading, bowling and playing cards. She and her husband enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping and picnicing. Lena also spent many hours doing volunteer work. She is survived by her husband Bill; son Fred (Joan); daughter Audrey (Dave); son Art (Mary-Lynn); son Hank (Karen); daughter Jackie (Gary). There are 12 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren. She also leaves three sisters: Ida (Merrick), Josephine and Marjorie. There are many nieces and nephews. Lena was predeceased by her parents Louis and Victoria Caplette; a sister Marie; brothers: Joseph and Gordon; and a nephew Lyle. Prayers were said at the Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, Rivers on Monday, September 4, 2000 at 7:00 p.m. Mass of the Christian Burial was celebrated at the church on Tuesday, September 5, 2000 at 11:00 a.m. Fr. Michael Wollbaum was celebrant. Pallbearers were sons Fred and Art Allen, sons-in-law Dave MacKay and Gary Ringland, and nephews Richard Allen and Gordon Fleury. The Rivers Royal Canadian Legion Ladies Auxilary formed an Honor Guard. All in attendance were considered honorary pallbearers. Interment followed at the Rivers Cemetery.
