Obituary

PARKOLUB: With family by her side, Margaret Parkolub passed away on Tuesday, July 29, 2008, after a prolonged illness (Huntington's disease), in the Palliative Care Unit of the Brandon Regional Health Centre. Margaret was born on March 08, 1935 on the family farm near Pope, Manitoba - the third of four children of James and Margaret (Peggy) Morison. Her husband John predeceased her in 2007. She is survived by her two sons Peter (Vancouver, BC) and Michael (Brandon). She also leaves behind her sisters Delia Milne and Marlene Little, both of Brandon. Her third sister, Elaine Kruger, predeceased her in 1997. Other survivors include her sister-in-laws Stella Sturko and her husband Walter of Brandon and Olga Bass of Burnaby, BC. Also surviving her is her brother-in-law Paul Parkolub and wife Gloria, of Brandon. Margaret grew up on the family farm in Pope, Manitoba, approximately 10 miles from Hamiota, Manitoba. She attended school in Oakner, Manitoba. As a young girl on the farm her skills as an excellent cook were honed as she assisted with meal preparations and household chores. She "deferred" the farm chores to her sisters, thereby maintaining her soft hands for her future career aspirations. After finishing high school Margaret commenced her career as a Hair Stylist in Brandon. During this time, Margaret married John Parkolub of Brandon on May 25, 1957. Their first child, Peter, was born in 1959. The second son Michael followed in 1962. Soon after, she retired from hairdressing and spent the next 12 years raising the two boys. She then briefly resumed her hairstyling career but soon after began working at Lindenberg's Garden Centre as a sales clerk. During the time that her family was growing up, time was spent with her parents at the Morison farm as her husband John assisted with chores and crops. Summers were also spent with family and friends in Sandy Lake or Clear Lake, or on fishing trips to Northern Manitoba. Several trips to the west coast in the summer also occurred as the children were growing up. Margaret was a very easy going individual. She loved to socialize and enjoyed the company of family and friends. She was an avid reader, and enjoyed the outdoors. She was an excellent cook and very good at accomplishing things with minimal effort. She was a very dedicated mother to her two sons. Margaret retired from her job at Lindenberg's Garden Centre in the early 1990's. It was at that time that the initial effects of Huntington's disease began to affect her daily living. She was attended to in the family home by her husband John until she was permanently hospitalized in the Assiniboine Centre in June 1997. The balance of her family's life was dedicated to keeping Margaret as well cared for as possible. John and her son Michael visited Margaret in the hospital on a daily basis, almost without fail, for the past 11 years. A private family graveside was held on Thursday July 31, 2008 in Brandon. Her remains were laid to rest along with the ashes of her late husband John, in the Brandon Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to do so, on behalf of Margaret and her family, can make a donation to the Research Division, Huntington's Society of Canada, 151 Frederick Street, Suite 400, Kitchener, Ontario, N2H 2M2, in her name. Expressions of sympathy may be made at www.memorieschapel.com. Arrangements were with Memories Chapel & Pre-Planning Centre, 727-0330.
