NORTHAM: It is with great sadness that the family announces the sudden passing of Margaret Isabell Northam (nee MacDougall) of Rapid City on Sunday, November 16, 2003, one week after celebrating her 75th birthday with her husband and all of her children. Margaret was born November 12, 1928. She completed her education in Rapid City. In 1946 she attended Tuxedo Normal School to obtain her teaching permit and then taught for one year. Following this she worked at a dentists office in Brandon for two years. On July 1, 1949 she married John Northam and returned to Rapid City. Margaret devoted her life to her family, community and friends. She leaves many legacies in the Rapid City area. She was a founding member of the Rapid City Library and was its librarian for 18 years, retiring in 1992. She was a life long member and driving force in the Legion Women's Auxiliary and the UCW. She and John have worked tirelessly to maintain the Rapid City Museum with the hope of keeping alive the history of the area and its people for future generations. She will be remembered as a big supporter of the Rapid City Fair - always working to have items to present, as well as a long time leader of the 4-H program. She was always busy sewing, tending to her garden or baking. She would never arrive to visit her grandchildren without a fresh batch of her legendary buns. She is survived by her husband of 54 years John Northam and six children: Linda (Ken) Black, Barbara (Doug) Peters, Gwen (Jim Pasieka), Alex (Kim), Elizabeth (Russell) Schmidt and Carol (Bob) Chmielnicki; 13 grandchildren: Christine, Michael, Jason, Jenna, William, Julia, Katelynn, Danielle, Jonathan, Justin, Jill, Brendan and Allison as well as 5 great-grandchildren: Sarah, Lane, Taylor, Brooke, and Kylie. Margaret was the last surviving member of her branch of what we fondly think of as the area's Clan MacDougall. She wore the mantle of matriarch proudly and her family will be forever grateful for the oral history she has imparted and pledge to continue it with our children and grandchildren. She was predeceased by her Father, Allan MacDougall (1935), her mother Mary (Minnie) MacDougall (1966), and by her beloved brothers Donald (1990), Hugh (1993) and Alex (1991). She lived her entire life by their family standard of strength, hard work and devotion to family. Margaret will especially be missed by the "Coffee Girls" - lifelong friends who have met weekly for over 40 years and who have supported each other through thick and thin. They were the sisters she never had and she loved them all dearly. The family will be forever grateful to Rev. Boyd Drake and Kathy Drake for unhesitatingly coming to Winnipeg to support us in our time of crisis and need. The Funeral Service will be held at Rapid City United Church on Friday, November 21, 2003 at 2:00 p.m. Interment will follow in the Rapid City Cemetery. Flowers are gratefully declined.
