Obituary

McCurdy: Margaret Elizabeth passed away after a short illness at her residence, Fairview Home, Brandon, Manitoba on Thursday, October 7, 1999 with her family at her side. Born in Waterville, Nova Scotia on February 9, 1905, Margaret was truly a remarkable, unique person who regarded herself as neither. A true "Bluenoser", she lived in her beloved Nova Scotia for 89 years before moving to Manitoba when living alone was no longer an option. Although Margaret didn't start playing the piano until she was twelve, she became a renowned concert pianist and accompanist, regularly broadcasting on CBC and travelling across Canada, the United States, Fiji, Hawaii, Australia and New Zealand as accompanist for the renowned violinist Leona Flood. After graduating from Dalhousie University, she did post graduate studies in London, England at the Royal School of Music. Margaret was honoured in 1987 as part of the centenary celebrations of the Maritime Conservatory of Music with a presentation by then Federal Cultural Minister Flora MacDonald for her contribution to Nova Scotia and the M.C.M. She was a charter member of the Nova Scotia Registered Music Teachers' Association and taught piano until she was 85. Margaret's husband, Archie McCurdy; her parents Frank and Lizzie (nee Manning) Kinsman; and sister, Hazel Doyle all predeceased her. She is survived by her loving daughters Elizabeth (Cordell) Grant, Brandon, MB and Peggy (Rick) Hurdle, Edmonton, AB; grandchildren: Meg Myette (Providence, Rhode Island, USA), Deborah Grant (New York, New York, USA) and Rodney Hurdle (Edmonton, AB); and precious great-granddaughter Ella Myette of Providence, Rhode Island, USA. A Ceremony to Celebrate Margaret's Life was held at First Presbyterian Church, Brandon, MB, on Saturday, October 9, 1999 with Rev. Dale Woods officiating. Dr. Lawrence Jones, pianist; Bev Cumming, organist; First Presbyterian Senior Choir and the Brandon Conservatory Chamber Choir provided a musical tribute. Interment of the cremated remains will take place in Nova Scotia on November 6, 1999. Flowers are gratefully declined and donations to "Special Awards Fund", Brandon Conservatory Chorale, c/o Brandon University Foundation, 270-18th Street, Brandon, MB, R7A 6A9 will be gratefully received in her memory. The family wishes to express eternal gratitude to the first floor staff of Fairview for their unparalleled care, concern and love shown to Mum and her family, especially during the last few days of her life. Special thanks and gratitude are also extended to Dale Woods and Arlene Robertson for their care and love during this difficult time. Arrangements were with Memories Chapel & Pre-Planning Centre, 727-0330.
