Elaine Dechka passed away in Brandon on Friday, February 28, 2025, at the age of 93.
Elaine was predeceased by her parents, Sid and Ida Higgens; sister Jean and her husband George Wilson; sister Pat and her husband Jack McKendrick.
She is survived by her husband of 72 years, Walter; son James (Vicki), their son Tyler (Saara), their children Jackson and Olivia; son Daniel (Sharon Shepherd), their sons Blake (Aly) and Kirk (Larissa); and son Brian.
Margaret Elaine was born on January 10, 1932, in Brandon, Manitoba. She took her registered
nursing degree in Brandon and met the love her life, Wally, the carpenter and drummer.
Elaine and Walter were married on August 1, 1953, in Brandon, Manitoba. They welcomed Jim to their family in 1957, Dan in 1959 and Brian in 1966. Walter built the house on Rosser Avenue that became their home for over 60 years. Mom stayed at home and raised the boys and returned
to the work force once the boys became independent.
Mom gave joy and life to all her family and friends and as a nurse on the 200 ward, Labor and
Delivery at Brandon General Hospital she also gave joy and life to so many others in her 30 year
nursing career. Never a job to her, rather her calling.
Mom loved her grandchildren, great grandchildren and all the 4 legged "Grand cats and dogs', she helped raise over the years. Nana was always enthused about all the endeavors of her grand and great grandchildren. She spoke often of how proud she was of them, and they were all fortunate to spend so much time with their Nana.
The cottage at Clear Lake was always a gathering spot for family and friends and summer highlights for many years were the barn dances at Sportsman's Park on Saturday night featuring The Syncopators Band with Wally Dechka beating the skins. The cottage at Clear Lake is still in the family 60 years later and will continue to hold fond memories of Elaine, Mom and Nana.
Elaine's (Mom, Nana) passing has left a void in Walt's and all our hearts so remembering and
celebrating the fun times will lessen the effects of grief and sorrow.
Thank you to the staff at Victoria Landing, Homecare, A2, A3 and Valleyview Personal Care. There are so many superlatives that our family could use for your dedication, commitment and caring that we have all witnessed over the last 5 years.
A family gathering will be held at a later date.
