The death of Vera Begg occurred at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Saturday, September 15, 2001. Vera was born on December 18, 1918 to Harold and Emily Westwood. She was raised and educated in Rapid City, Manitoba. Vera was the only daughter among three brothers, so she learned to fend for herself at a young age. Vera met Walter Begg of Bow Island, Alberta and they married on November 29, 1943. They lived in Brandon where she worked for the Massey Harris Co., until 1949. Vera and Walter started farming north of Rapid City, where she worked hard helping out on the farm. Vera also kept herself busy as a member of the Rapid City U.C.W., was a school bus driver and a 4-H leader. They adopted one child in 1950, a daughter, Kathie. Vera had a great love for flowers, gardening and sewing. They moved back to Brandon in 1968. After such a busy farm life she felt she had too much time on her hands so she worked at Fairview Home from 1970 until 1981. Still not ready to slow down Vera became a Home Care worker from 1981 through 1985. In 1985 she retired from the work force. She now took time for herself and enjoyed travelling to various parts of the country with family and friends. Vera was always ready and willing to help anyone in need. She had a big heart and lots of love for everyone, and was loved by all who knew her. This past year her health started to fail and she was hospitalized in August 2001. She was moved to the Assiniboine Centre where she was at the time of her sudden passing. Vera is survived by her daughter, Kathie (Chuck) Nelson; grandchildren, Len, Tannis and Steven Hemauer; her pride and joy great grandson, Jackson; brother, Roy (Vivian) Westwood; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Westwood and Hazel Westwood; brother-in-law, Jon Nielsen. Also surviving are numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles. Vera was predeceased by her parents, Harold and Emily Westwood; brothers, Stanley and Arthur; half-sisters, Florence and Phyllis; her step-mother, Kathleen and husband Walter. The Graveside Ceremony was held at the Rapid City Cemetery on Friday, September 20, 2001 at 2:00 p.m. The Rev. Boyd Drake officiated. A time of fellowship and refreshment followed at the Rapid City United Church. Flowers are gratefully declined.
