Obituary

BATES: Sadly we announce the passing of Lisa Stephanie Bates (nee Dixon) on Friday, April 20, 2007 at the age of 89 years. Lisa was predeceased by her husband Bill, her parents Frederick and Beatrice Dixon; brothers Norris, Douglas and infant Edward; and sisters Christine and Ruth; father-in-law William Bates Sr.; mother-in-law Ellen "Nellie" Bates; brothers-in-law Tom Marsden, John Bates; sister-in-law Marie; brothers-in-law Denis Richardson and Leonard Brown. Lisa will be sadly missed and lovingly remembered by her daughters and their families: Denise Town (David Will) of Lacombe, Alberta, Maureen (Morris) Mymko of Thunder Bay, Ontario, and Marsha (Murray) McLeod of Brandon; grandchildren: Sean Town, Angela Town (Fred Kozak), Darcy (Janet) Will, Samantha Will, Mark (Lauren) Mymko, Marnie (Brad) Rice, Matthew and John McLeod; great grandchildren: MacKenzie, Dasha and Morgan Rice, Laura Kozak, Ashley, Lauren and Andrew Will. She is also survived by: sister-in-law Eileen Marsden; brother-in-law Gordon Bates (Jeanne); devoted niece Judy Taylor; Rob (Tania) Jack and Abigail Taylor; Jennifer Taylor: nephew John Marsden and numerous nieces and nephews. Lisa was born at St. Mary's Parish, Ocho Rios, Jamaica, West Indies. She and her brothers and sisters were raised at Prospect Plantation in Ocho Rios. Lisa met and married William James Bates, July 5, 1941 in Jamaica, where he was stationed with the Canadian Forces during the Second World War. She left her tiny island and arrived in Manitoba, September 1941. Lisa and Bill lived in British Columbia for a time before returning to farm in the Poplar Hill District in 1949. Lisa met life with resilience and learned to love the prairies and the farm. Her favorite times were outdoors in her garden where she would whistle and listen to the birds sing. When Bill passed away in 1973, Lisa remained on the farm until moving to Brandon in 1981, where she enjoyed her daily walks along the river. She lived with Marsha Murray and their boys for four years until moving to Dinsdale Personal Care Home on 2001 where she was tenderly cared for by all. Lisa loved her family and had a special place in her heart for animals, particularly dogs (most especially Muffin). Lisa always found time to show she cared and was willing to lend an ear to all those that were so special to her. We will miss her smile, her softness, her kind and understanding ways. Special thanks to Dr. Mary Egan and the staff at the Dinsdale Personal Care Home. A family memorial service was held at Memories Chapel on Tuesday, April 24, 2007. If friends so desire, donations in memory of Lisa may be made to Dinsdale Personal Care Home, 510-6th Street, Brandon, Manitoba, R7A 3N9 or to the Brandon Humane Society, 2200-17th Street East, Brandon, Manitoba, R7A 7M6.
