Obituary

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Lenard Kitchener King, son of the late Albert and Ada King, at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Thursday, April 12, 2001 following a brief illness. Len was predeceased by his wife Chris Mitchell and wife of 56 yers, Claudia King, his parents, brother Robert and sister Evelyn. He leaves to mourn his passing, his beloved wife Margaret: four children; daughter, Joan and husband Donald Merino of Brandon, sons, Leonard and wife Brigitte of Winnipeg, Robert and wife Beverly of Abbotsford, BC and James and wife Sharon of Winnipeg. There are eleven grandchildren and eighteen great grandchildren. He leaves sisters; Winnie Goodridge of Carberry, Dorothy Long of Vernon, BC and Florence Monson of Toronto, ON. There are numerous nieces and nephews. Lenard King was born and grew up in the Arizona district of Manitoba. He moved to Brandon with his parents in 1936. In 1937, he joined the 29th Battery, Royal Canadian Artillery. In 1940, he transferred to the Army Service Corps and served in England with No. 1 Canadian Transport Company. After the war, he and his family resided in Winnipeg, where he worked for Modern Dairies. In 1956, Len was offered a chance to move back to Brandon. He retired from Modern Dairies in 1981. Len was a member of the Royal Canadian Legion for over 50 years, a member of the Independent Order of Foresters for over 40 years and has held various offices with both organizations. Lenard made many lasting and sincere friends in his school days and professional life. He was a kind man with a ready smile and an encouraging word. He will be fondly remembered by all who knew him. He loved to golf at Deer Ridge and look after his vegetable garden. He could be found every year at the Mall, selling Poppies for the Legion Poppy Fund, which he greatly enjoyed. A time of visitation for friends will be held at Memories Chapel, 330-18th Street North on Monday evening, April 16, 2001 from 7:00 to 8:00 pm. The funeral service will be held at Memories Chapel on Tuesday, April 17, 2001 at 2:30 pm. Capt. Roy Dueck of the Salvation Army will officiate. Interment will follow in the Rosewood Memorial Gardens. Flowers are gratefully declined. Friends may make a donation in memory of Len to the Canadian Cancer Society, 415-1st Street, Brandon, R7A 2W8. The King family wish to extend a thank-you to Dr. M. Egan and the nuses on A-2 Palliative for all their care and compassion. Arrangements are with Memories Chapel & Pre-Planning Centre, 727-0330.
