Valdymar “Lawnie” Halchyshak

August 7, 1939 – September 26, 2026

Lawnie Halchyshak, age 87 years, passed away with family by his side at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Saturday, September 26, 2026.

Lawnie was born in Newdale and raised on the family’s mixed farm alongside his parents and siblings. At a young age, he left home and worked at a few jobs such as Hydro and the Oil Rigs. In 1962, Lawnie started with Inco (International Nickel Company) in Thompson, Manitoba where he made his home and raised his family with wife Norma. After 34 years, Lawnie retired and he and Norma moved to Brandon, Manitoba where he spent his time volunteering, traveling, golfing and taking casino trips.

Volunteering on various organizations included Knights of Columbus - Thompson, Wheat City Lions Club - Brandon, and the Canadian Ukrainian Men’s Club - Brandon. Lawnie and Norma enjoyed many trips that included Denmark, Sweden, France, Germany, cruises to Alaska, the Caribbean, Panama Canal and they motor homed across Canada and the southern United States.

Lawnie is survived by his wife Norma (nee Andersen), daughter Barbara Barrie, son Mitchell, seven grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and four sisters: Olga, Marion, Rose and Helen.

Lawnie was predeceased by his son Kevin (December 1, 2019), daughter Lenora Argue (December 6, 2019) and son-in-law Tom Barrie (December 11, 2025).

Divine Liturgy will be held at St. Mary's Ukrainian Catholic Church, 927 Assiniboine Avenue on Friday, October 2, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Fr. Yaroslav Strukhlyak as Celebrant and Stella Fedeniuk as Cantor. Interment will follow at the Brandon Cemetery.

Cross Bearer will be Great Grandson Teddy Drul. Pallbearers are Grandsons: Sean Barrie, Ryan Argue, and Brenden Halchyshak, Great-Grandson: Logan Barrie and Nephews: Darcy Woychyshyn and Curtis Creaser.

Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations in memory of Lawnie may be made to the Brandon Regional Health Centre Foundation for Palliative Care, 150 McTavish Avenue East, Brandon, Manitoba, R7A 2B3.
