Obituary

Vern A. Foster of Brandon, Manitoba passed away at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Monday, January 29, 2001. Born in Boissevain, Manitoba on May 15, 1937 to Art and Irene Foster, the family moved to Brandon where Vern received his education. His working days began with an after school job at Mansoff Welding. In 1957 he was employed by Manitoba Hydro. A career change began in November 1966 when he was employed at the old Brandon Jail. After many interesting years as a Correctional Officer, Vern retired from the Brandon Correctional Institute in June 1995. His favourite past times were fishing, camping, travelling and reading. Many days were enjoyed at Killarney Lake with family and friends. He was very patient while his children and many of their friends were learning to water ski. Vern enjoyed doing volunteer work for different organizations, one of these being "Meals on Wheels". He was also a radio dispatcher for both the Canada Games and the Olympic Curing Trials held in Brandon in 1997. As a member of the Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum, he particularly enjoyed the tourists he met while conducting tours of the facility. Because of his dedication at the museum he was fortunate to have the opportunity to be a passenger in the famous Tiger Moth and Harvard planes. Vern is survived by his beloved wife, Dorothy, daughters; Brenda (George) Davidson and their son Kyle of Edmonton, Alberta, Arlene Foster (Ed Fitzmaurice) and their sons Jared and Brock of Whitewood, Saskatchewan, son; Garth (Kim Reinert) of Edmonton, Alberta. Also surviving is his mother Irene, brothers; Clarence and Wayne and their families, all of Brandon, as well as many other relatives. Vern was predeceased by his father Art and brother Elliott. The Ceremony to Celebrate Vern's Life was held at Memories Chapel on Thursday, February 01, 2001 at 2:00 p.m. Honorary pallbearers were: Lloyd Millard, Andy Gagnon, Lloyd Harness, Alyce Johnston, Ray Yacyshen and Bill Burnett. An honour guard was provided by the Brandon Correctional Centre. Urn bearer was Claire Bartley. Interment followed at the Brandon Cemetery. If friends so desire, donations in memory of Vern may be made to the Brandon General Hospital Foundation, Special Equipment Fund, 150 McTavish Avenue East, Brandon, Manitoba R7A 2B3. Arrangements were with Memories Chapel & Pre-Planning Centre, 727-0330. "In our Garden of Remembrance, There's a little sheltered spot. Fragrant with the bloom and beauty, Of the Sweet Forget Me Not. And no flower in our garden, Fairer, brighter ever grew, Than the little flower that whispers, We will always remember you."
