Obituary

Kenneth Gordon "Ken" Shappert passed away at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Wednesday, April 13, 2016. Ken was born in Millwood, Manitoba on January 9, 1932, to Henry and Winnie Shappert. Henry was a CPR lineman so the family moved a lot: Millwood, Foxwarren, Inglis, Pierson, Beresford and Brandon. Ken took his schooling in Foxwarren and Pierson. In his youth, he played baseball, being a true Toronto Blue Jays fan and loved to curl, spending many hours at the rink. As he grew older those hours were spent in front of the TV watching baseball and curling. Ken worked as a service and parts person at Gambles International and then later for Westman Equipment. He was a very good mechanic and could always be called upon to get things running. Ken devoted his adult life to caring for his mother (Gran). They spent many hours fishing, gardening and travelling to visit family. Ken had a passion for golf and could be found at Sunnyside Golf Course with his golf buddies every day after he retired. He loved his dogs, especially Taffy, and was heartbroken when he lost her. As Ken aged, he decided to take up painting and was a self-taught artist. He and his niece Val travelled all over Westman attending the Arts West Juried Art Shows. His paintings were often chosen to travel with the Travelling Art Show throughout southwest Manitoba. The highlight came in 2004, when a painting was chosen to be shown at the Legislative Building in Winnipeg. He was so proud! With a camera in his hand, Ken spent many days out at the farm with Val and Ed, showing off his photography skills. He was predeceased by his father in 1961, his mother in 2000, his eldest sister, Marjorie Halliday in 1981 and brother-in-law Clarence Halliday in 1992. He is survived by his sister Marion Chapin of Dauphin and many nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. A Graveside Service took place at the Brandon Cemetery on Friday, April 22, 2016 with Lydia Glawson, Funeral Celebrant, officiating. A reception followed at Memories Chapel. Donations in memory of Ken may be made to the Brandon Humane Society, 2200 17th Street East, Brandon, MB R7A 7M6.
