Dr. Kenneth Ralph Hanly, fondly known as Ken, was born to Harold (Leslie) and Rosetta Viola
Hanly, on July 30, 1932, in Clinton, Ontario. He obtained his B.A. (honour in English and
Philosophy) from the University of Saskatchewan in 1959, his M.A. in Philosophy from the same
institution in 1960, and his Ph.D. in Philosophy with honours from the University of Oregon in
1967. Ken was initially appointed to the Philosophy Department at Brandon University in 1963.
He retired as of June 30, 1996, and in 1998, the Board of Governors of Brandon University
conferred the title of Professor Emeritus.

At Brandon University, Ken was the poetry co-editor of " Pierian Spring" from 1982-1983, editor
from 1984-1985, and the editor of "Dollar Poems" from 1983-1987. He also served as a
representative on the University Tenure Committee and the Senate. Ken was active in the NDP
during his tenure at Brandon University. He was also engaged in the community and
organizations through membership at the Manitoba Police Commission (1982-1987), the
Manitoba Law Reform Commission (1970s), Amnesty International, the Canadian Authors
Association, the Manitoba Writer's Guild, the Manitoba Association of Rights and Liberties, and
was an associate member of the League of Canadian Poets (1984-1986).

After retirement he continued to enjoy writing opinions on politics and social issues and at one
point had a blog. He loved going for walks, feeding the cat and birds, listening to classical music,
going on road trips with family and friends, and having an occasional beer to end the day.

Ken's loving spirit is carried on by his wife, Sonia; his children, David, Sean, Diane (Martin);
Adrienne, Sylvester, Jason, Damon (Rebecca); his stepdaughter Katrina (Sheryl) along with his
grandchildren Harrison and Rosemary and niece Patricia Hanly. He was predeceased by his
former wife, Elizabeth, his brother Robert Hanly and his beloved pets Silver (dog), Tiger, Fatboy,
Muffet, and Magic (cats).

To honour Ken's memory, a service will be held at Memories Chapel on Wednesday, February
19, 2025, at 1:00 pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a charity of your choice in honour of Ken Hanly.
