Ken was born on April 16, 1928 on the family farm at Elgin, Manitoba. He often spoke of his early years recalling the challenging times of the dirty thirties. Ken loved working on the farm with relatives and neighbours, as well as playing ball with the local farm boys. During his years at Elgin, Ken was dedicated to the community. He served on the Elgin School Board, as a delegate with Manitoba Pool and on committees for construction of the curling and skating rinks, as well as the community hall. Ken supported the Elgin Cubs Ball Team and spent many summer evenings umpiring. After health problems forced him to retire from farming in 1977, Ken worked for Manitoba Crop Insurance as an adjustor for 16 years. He enjoyed walking the fields, talking farming and associating with his fellow adjustors. After moving to Brandon, Ken served on the Board of Directors of the Brandon General Hospital for 10 years and participated in the formation of the Brandon Regional Health Authority. He was the Executive Director of the World Youth Baseball Championships held in Brandon in 1994.
