The death of Kenneth O. Carter-Squire of Brandon, beloved husband of Myra, father of Donald, Sheila, Bruce and Cliff, occurred in the city on Thursday, November 28, 2002. Ken was born in Boissevain, Manitoba on March 21, 1923, son of Joseph and Bertha Carter-Squire. He was predeceased by: his parents and a brother John "Jack", a brother-in-law Bob Armstrong and sister-in-law, Margaret "Peggy" Newfield. Ken is survived by his wife of fifty-three years, Myra; sons, Don (Glenda) of Saskatoon, Bruce and Cliff (Belinda) of Brandon and daughter, Sheila of Brandon. He also leaves grandchildren, Pamela, Darren, Lindsay, Loretta and Andrea (Steve) Danychuk and great grandchildren, Alisha, Christopher, Meagan and Avery. Ken is also survived by, his sister, Ethel Armstrong of Boissevain, brother-in-law, George Newfield and sister-in-law, June Carter-Squire. There are many nieces and nephews. Ken spent his early years in Boissevain and on the family homestead. He attended school until he achieved his Grade Ten and thereafter became a journeyman electrician. Eventually, he decided to become a policeman, serving initially in Brandon and later in Birtle, Kelvington, Saskatchewan and then as a staff Sergeant for Metropolitan Investigation and Security in Saskatoon and The Pas. Regardless of where Ken lived, he always managed to join or create, his own orchestra. He played violin from a very early age and later taught himself to play the tenor saxophone, which was always his greatest love. As well as his love for music, Ken had a real affinity for animals. He was involved with horses on the farm and raised Greyhounds and Irish and Russian Wolfhounds. He rescued a puppy from the dump in The Pas and his second last dog was a Suluki, which had been abandoned, eventually captured and taken to the city pound. Mr. Beam who knew of Ken's liking for hounds phoned and asked if he would adopt this stray. As a policeman, Ken was often called to handle stray animals, which often ended up staying at his home until he could find them a home. He loved cats and often fed the strays that wandered into the yard. He brought some of them into the house as well. He also raised cockatiels, lovebirds and kept a variety of parrots and budgies. Ken could fix anything. He could take a guitar or violin that was in a million pieces and make it whole. He could repair violin bows and replace pads on saxophones. He would fix any electrical appliance in the house with the exception of televisions or the fridge. Everything else would respond to his "Master" touch. He will be sadly missed by, his family and many friends. The Ceremony to Celebrate Ken's Life will be held at Memories Chapel, 330-18th Street North on Tuesday, December 3, 2002 at 2:30 pm. Flowers are gratefully declined. Friends who wish may make a donation in memory of Ken to the Brandon Humane Society, 2200-17th Street East, Brandon, MB R7A 7G3.
