DRIEDGER: After a battle with cancer, Katie Driedger went home to be with her Lord and loved ones on Wednesday, May 11, 2005. She was born August 27, 1923 in a small village near Slavgorod, Siberia to Abram and Mary Driediger. Katie's father served as a lay pastor and as a result was blacklisted by the communists. The family, including five children, made a miraculous escape to Germany, then to Canada, during 1929 to 1930. They settled on a farm east of Brookdale, Manitoba with a host family. It was here that Katie entered grade one at Norman School. At an early age, Katie accepted Christ into her life and she considered it her most important decision. Several years after their arrival at Brookdale, Katie's father succumbed to pneumonia and passed away. The family moved to Winnipeg, living there several years. Katie's mother met and married George Rogalski and moved with her family to his farm near McAuley, Manitoba. After completing grade nine, Katie stayed home to assist her mother on the farm. Katie enrolled next at Steinbach Bible School and after completing several years, she returned to her family at McAuley. Shortly after this, the family moved to Justice, Manitoba to another farm. It was here that Katie met and married John Driedger. Their wedding was on June 19, 1948. John and Katie became very involved in farming and parenting as well as helping along in their local church, Justice Mennonite Brethren Church. She enjoyed teaching Sunday School, cooking at Gospel Light Bible Camp, singing in a trio and choir and volunteering at the M.C.C. Thrift Store. In 1985, John and Katie moved to Brandon for their retirement. Richmond Park Mennonite Brethren Church became their new church home. They were very appreciative of their new church family, neighbours and friends. Katie eagerly looked forward to each summer's family time at Clear Lake, as well as Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter and birthdays with her children and grandchildren. Her interests also included a great flower and vegetable garden, quilting, reading, crosstiching, visiting with her friends and neighbours, volunteering at Fairview Home and baking "grandma buns". Katie was predeceased by John, her husband of 53 years, an infant brother Abram, her father Abram, mother Mary, younger sister Anne, and older sister Mary. She is survived by her daughters, Marion of Brandon, Ruth (Al) Froese and grandsons Mark, Daniel and Chris of Yorkton, SK, sons Len (Lorri) Driedger and grandsons Eric, Adam, Miles, Kurt and Caleb of Russell, MB, Fred (Lori) Driedger and grandchildren Matthew and Katie of Brandon, MB, and daughter Joyce (Ken) Friesen and grandsons Michael, Jonathan and Bradley of Springstein, MB. Katie is also survived by her brothers Jake and Ab, and sister Helen. The funeral service for Katie Driedger was held at Richmond Park M.B. Church, 1525 - 26th Street on Monday, May 16, 2005 with Pastor Dave Ens officiating. Pallbearers were grandchildren Daniel Froese, Eric Driedger, Adam Driedger, Caleb Driedger, Matthew Driedger, Katie Driedger, Jonathan Friesen, and Bradley Friesen. Interment followed at the Sparling Cemetery, Justice, MB. Memorial donations may be made to The Gideon's Brandon Camp, P.O. Box 20060, Brandon, MB R7A 5Y8 or to the M.C.C. Thrift Store, 414 Pacific Avenue, Brandon, MB R7A 0H5. Expressions of sympathy may be forwarded to memorieschapel@mts.net. Arrangements were with Memories Chapel and Pre-Planning Centre, 727-0330.
