POSTHUMUS: Justina Posthumus, widow of the late Frank Posthumus Sr. and formerly of Rapid City, passed away peacefully at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on Friday, August 5, 2005. She was born in Gnadenthal, Manitoba on May 6, 1922 the daughter of Jacob and Maria Wall and one of fourteen children. Justina attended school at Stuartburn, Manitoba when she was allowed to do so and somehow managed to cram 8 years of education into 4 + years of actual attendance. At the age of 14 years, she left home to join the workforce and spent the next 6 years working as a hired girl - a common occupation in the 30's which entailed everything from nanny to housekeeper to homecare worker to farm labourer. In 1943, Justina was employed south of Brandon as a farm labourer when she met Frank Posthumus, a Dutch immigrant who was renting the neighbouring farm. They were married on April 5, 1943 and the following year they bought a farm south of Rapid City. Together they raised seven children, and built and expanded a successful farming operation. In 1980 they retired to Rapid City and in 1983, after nearly 40 years of marriage Frank passed away. Justina remained in Rapid City until 1995 when she moved to Brandon and remained in her own home until her passing. She will be lovingly remembered by her children, Frank (Lois Gabrielle) Posthumus, Maria (Hal) Glanfield, Bill Posthumus, Sandra (Terry) Mahyles, Elaine (Bob) Medernach and Linda (Murray) Phillips; seventeen grandchildren and one great grandchild; brother, Diedrich "Dick" Wall and sisters, Katherine Vogt and Gertrude Shore. Justina was predeceased by her husband, Frank; parents Jacob and Maria Wall; son, Bob Posthumus; granddaughter, Bonnie Posthumus; and also by siblings, John, Anne, Cornelius, Peter, Jacob, Elizabeth, Nicholas, Mary, Isaac and Helen. The Funeral Ceremony was held at Memories Chapel on Wednesday, August 10, 2005. The Rev. Orton Anderson officiated. Pallbearers were: Ross Glanfield, Mike Posthumus, Brant Mahyles, Miles Glanfield, Joey Medernach and Ed Melinchuk. Interment followed in the Rapid City Cemetery. Flowers are gratefully declined. Friends who wish may make a donation in memory of Mrs. Posthumus to the Brandon Regional Health Centre Foundation for Palliative Services, 150 McTavish Avenue East, Brandon, MB R7A 2B3.
