Joyce Arline Stovel (nee Berg) passed away with family by her side on Wednesday, December 25, 2024, in the ICU, Brandon Regional Health Centre.

Joyce was born on February 25th, 1942, in the town of Clarkfield, Minnesota, U.S.A to Ruth and Wilhelm Berg. She grew up on the family farm a few miles south of Clarkfield with 5 siblings – Carol, Charlie, Marilyn, Margaret and Stan. They had a good life on the farm, helping with chores, having many adventures, exploring the farmland where corn and soya beans were grown and dealing with the animals that they had at various times – dairy cows, feeder cattle, pigs and chickens.

Joyce attended Clarkfield Public School from Grade 1 to 12, graduating in 1960. After high school she moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota and worked in an office at the Lutheran Bible Institute (LBI). Joyce sadly had to return to Clarkfield for about a year to help on the farm and with her siblings after the unexpected death of her beloved mother Ruth at the age of 42. She returned to Minneapolis and attended LBI as a student from 1961 - 1962. While working at the LBI office, she met her future husband Peter Stovel, one of the auditors who worked there for a few weeks. They were married in her hometown of Clarkfield on September 8th, 1962. Peter and Joyce lived and worked in Minneapolis. In 1963, after Perry was born, Joyce quit work and was a stay-at-home mom. David was born in 1965.

In November 1966, Pete was offered and accepted a position in the accounting department at Simplot Canada (now Koch Fertilizer), located in Brandon, Manitoba. He began his new career on December 1st, 1966. While in Brandon, Kerstin was born in 1968, and Nancy in 1971.

Joyce had a home daycare for a few years, caring for several children from all day to a few hours before and after school. When their children were of school age, Joyce entered back into the work force. She worked as a typist/secretary, briefly at Brandon University and then from 1983-2006 at the Brandon School Division. For several years following, Joyce worked as a casual secretary with the school division.

Favorite past times were gardening, baking, sewing, cooking, knitting and other crafts. She enjoyed singing in several choirs during her lifetime, lastly with Senior Songbirds at Seniors for Seniors with Pete. Joyce and Pete were very involved with church, especially at Redeemer Lutheran Church after moving to Brandon. They also both spent many years volunteering for many different groups and served on various boards. These included their church (Redeemer Lutheran Church), CAMROC, Family Visions, COR, Special Olympics, etc.

The family appreciated their time together golfing, skiing, camping, road trips (air shows, Formula 1 and Indy car races, Valleyfair, golf tournaments and family gatherings). Over the years there were many enjoyable trips to Winnipeg, Minnesota, North Dakota, Florida as well as trips to Colorado, Banff/Canmore, Sudbury, Toronto, Detroit, Hawaii, and a memorable family cruise to Norway. They especially loved the camping years.

Joyce was predeceased by her parents Ruth and Bill, stepmom Dorothy, in-laws Harry and Edith, her daughter Kerstin, husband Pete, sister Carol, brother Stan, brother-in-law Ed, sister-in-law Bonnie.
Left to mourn Joyce is her son Perry (Kim), granddaughters Kelsey and Lauren, son David, daughter Nancy, brother Charlie (RoseMary) Berg, sisters Marilyn (Denny) Murphy and Margaret (George) Sommerfeld, brother-in-law James Stovel, and many nieces, nephews and their families.

Mom last lived at Hillcrest Place, Brandon where she enjoyed getting to know the other residents. She and the family appreciate the care she received from all the staff there. We would also like to express our thanks to the many medical providers and staff who cared for her at other clinics and hospitals in the last several years. Mom also wanted to thank all her great friends that would frequently visit her at Hillcrest. She really enjoyed your visits.

A Celebration of Joyce's Life will take place at Memories Chapel, 330 18th Street North, Brandon, MB on Monday, December 30, 2024 at 1:00 p.m. with reception to follow. Interment will be held at a later date.

Donations in memory of Joyce may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Ave, Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9 or to a charity of their choice.
